Samsung cell phone purchased in Australia. Can I use it in Europe? Need Help.

I was given a Samsung SGH-R220 dual band cell phone that was purchased in Australia. It now has an Australian sim card. Did I read here that many phones purchased abroad are unlocked? I would like to buy a sim card in Portugal and use the phone.

I downloaded the manual, but it does not tell me which bands the phone has. Should I assume they are the 900/1800 compatable Europe ones. I realize with only two bands, I cannot use it in the US. I am not planning on doing that anyway.

I am thining of calling Samsung, but I am clueless and don't want to really sound stupid. And I am wondering if US service people would be able to answer questions about this phone.

Can anyone help?

Hi sher,

Of course, by asking a bunch of strangers you ......

Samsung will be able to answer all of your questions, and they won't think you sound stupid.

Ira. I don't feel like you guys are a bunch of strangers. I have been posting here a long time and am always grateful for the responses even though a lot of us don't know each other.

There have been a lot of postings on cell phones and very good responses.

But thank you for your answer. I will try to call Samsung.
Sherry

From what I can find, most Australian operators use the 900MHz GSM frequency. But I think you can assume the other band is 1800.

To find out if your phone is locked or not, ask something who uses T-Mobile or AT&T/Cingular here, and borrow his/her SIM card. If your phone is locked, it will not even start searching for frequency, and will say something like "prohibited".

rkkwan. I finally found the specs for the phone and it is 900/1800.

I called Samsung, and although they were very nice said that they could only really answer questions about US Samsung phones. But like you said suggested I borrow a sim card from an AT&T or T-Mobile user. Luckily my brother is one of those.

At least that will tell me if the phone is locked. Now, I will research how to unlock it if I need to.

Thanks.
