Salzburg to Zermatt

I wish to travel from Salzburg to Zermatt by train via Innsbruck taking in the Glacier Express. Has anyone who has done this train trip and what is the best way to travel.

Sandjones, we did this exact trip some years ago....it was a long day! The scenery was beautiful along the way, but like I said ...it was a long day. We took the train from Salzburg to Innsbruck and spent the night there. I, personally, did not care much for Innsbruck and couldn't wait to get out of there. The next morning we took the train to Chur and spent the night there. Chur was actually quite a nice little medieval city. We walked around, had some great Thai food and relaxed. The next morning we got on the Glacier Express and headed out to Zermatt. Eight hours or so later....we were in Zermatt. In Zermatt we stayed at the Hotel Bellavista. A really great hotel...spotlessly clean, fabulous view (from our balcony, we looked straight at the Matterhorn).

Thanks NE. The more I research this trip the more inclined we are to travel from Salzburg to Zurich and on to Lucerne in one trip and then make our way south to Zermatt from Lucerne. This way we still expreience the Glacier express without the long trip from Salzburg via Innsbruck - Cheers

Sand,

I've done the Glacier Express route twice, the first time by making all the changes along the route and the second time on the Panoramic train with no changes. Both ways took 8 1/2 hours. The route goes from (or to) St. Moritz to Zerrmatt, so if you go from Lucerne to Zerrmatt you will be missing the most scenic part of the journey. Just wanted to let you know. Have a good trip.

We have taken this trip - bar car - several times, a trip which we would like to take again and again. We go Salzberg to "Zell am see" in Austria and stay at least 3-4 days then drive to "St. Mortiz" in Switzerland and stay there at least 4 days from there you can be off to "Chur" or various destinations of your choice depending on your time schedule and budgets... enjoy the drive
