Your question is one that can't really be answered properly because you didn't provide enough information. You can go from Salzburg to Switzerland by train, car, bus, or air. You can walk or ride a bike. If you want scenery and want to be able to stop when you see something interesting, go by car. I wouldn't go any other way except by car, but some people disagree.

Another problem in helping you is that you don't say where you are ultimately headed, what kind of things you like to see, and what kind of expenses you expect to pay. Also, Switzerland is small, but not so small that you can simply say "I'm going to Switzerland" and expect an answer. Where do you want to go in Switzerland? How long do you want to stay? What do you want to do once there? Where will you go from there?

When you get your plans in order, you might come back and ask for more advice.

OK here is the detail.
We are driving from Vienna to Salzburg. And then we were thinking of going to Innsbruck, and some nearby town. And then going to Zurich. We are in Vienna for 2 nights, 1 night in Salzburg , maybe another night in Innsbruck and that would leave us with only 3 days in Zurich. SO my question is should we directly take a train to Zurich, or is there a closeby town to Austrai we can take a train and then drive from that town to Zurich so that we get to see some swiss countryside.

Message: I'm with Wayne. The cities you want to visit are easily accessible. It's a straight shot from Innsbruck to Zurich. Drove in and about Zurich and found travel ok. Innsbruck does have a few parking garages. Innsbruck is a ok city for a day but more than one over night would be to much. IMO

Hello Mbist,

I don't like to drive while on vacation, so I can't offer much advice on driving this route.

But if you want to go by train, here are some options after stopping for one night in Innsbruck:

Train/bus to Scuol, in the Engadin. The trip takes about three hours, with the following trip to Zurich about three hours.

Train to Zug (but the best connections go through Zurich, so that kinda defeats your purpose).

Train to Luzern (the same problem - the best connections go through Zurich).

You could train directly from Innsbruck to Zurich, then spend your free days exploring the delights of the Zurichsee and taking day-trips to Zug and Luzern. You could see quite a bit while minimizing the hassles of packing & unpacking.

Another option would be to overnight in Kitzbuehel instead of Innsbruck, then taking the train directly to Zurich, as before.

You really have so many wonderful options -- I don't think any of them will disappoint.

You can check the train schedules at www.rail.ch (click on "Travel/Timetables").

s
