Salzburg Austria Lodging
Hello! Will be driving from Vienna to Salzburg for three nights in mid-May. My first trip to Austria. Looking for charming, quiet lodging with breakfast. Will have car but would like to leave it parked, so something near a bus line is best. Outside city is OK. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Salzburg's city centre is so small, there is hardly a need to take the bus (unless you want to make it into the suburbs).
That said, for hotels in good location I'd look into these:
1. Altstadt Radisson Blu, very traditional in decor, clean, but not modern and arguably a bit dated, reasonably quiet if you ask for a courtyard view, only portable airconditioners (I find portable ones useless as too noisy and ineffective), but you may not need aircon in May yet and the windows can be opened.
Strategically well placed on the extension of Getreidegasse, just 5 min by foot from the cathedral, Mozart's birth place et. al. (but then everything within Old Town is jsut a 10 min. walk anyway)

2. Blaue Gans, modern design behind old wlls right next to the posh Goldener Hirsch at the other end of Getreidegasse from the Altstadt Radisson. Not as upscale, but clean looks and also a good location at normally competitive rates.

Both of the following are in quiet suburban areas just south of the city center - free parking - very easy to reach from the autobahn - free parking and an easy bus ride into the old town - 15 minutes perhaps
Haus am Moos
A fine Pension / B and B close to a bus stop of line 21 - short ride into city center - nice family owned and operated plavce - nicely furnished with a good breakfast and a fair price.

Friesacher Hotel
just south of the city in nearby Anif- easy to reach by auto- free underground hotel parking - nicely decorated rooms - fine selection of restaurants
fine facilities with a great pool - fine and full breakfast buffet .

I have stayed at both places- enjoyed each.

I should add that in both Vienna and Salzburg a auto is an expensive liability .
Parking in both cities is very expensive.
The auto good to have for visiting the salzburg land Lake distirct and points in between the cities , but when in a city leave it parked and walk - both city sightseeing is conveniently compact or take public transport - cheap and convenient .

Another one in a quiet area/village a short bus ride from the centre is The Sallerhof - with ample parking.

Lovely surroundings with views to the mountains and some good eating in the same street.
We have stayed there twice - in spacious and spotless rooms and leaving window open at night kept it a comfortable temperature in late April.

We have stayed at both of these. Both are an easy walk to the city centre. They are in a beautiful area with views of the Untersburg. Restaurants within walking distance. Bus route as well.

We stayed here a few years ago :

A pleasant, clean hotel very centrally located, perhaps the best location in the city. On a pedestrian street, but just a few hundred feet from a huge underground parking lot.
