Steve,

We stayed at the Trumer Stube in the center of town. A very nice place with a lift. You can e-mail them to see if they have any room at trumer-stube.at. That is a pretty busy time in Salzburg, but wherever you stay try to get as close to old town as possible. Good luck.

Greg
Try the Hotel Pension Fugerhof. The prices are very reasonable, the hotel istelf is a picture post card Alpine chalet stuck on a hill and the folks that run the place are very nice. The rooms are good sized, are ensuite and clean.

The hotel is about 2 miles from the old city, but the bus runs right by it and runs about every 10 to 15 minutes.

On previous trips we stayed at the Hotel Stiglbrau and the Hotel Zum Hirschen and this place was much lower priced. I

Is there an inconveniece?

Yes, but in our opinion it was worth it.

US

We drove to Salzburg last year and stayed at the Sallerhof in the suburb of Grödig. It is a little ways out of town, but on a bus route, and close to Schloss Heilbrunn. Getting to the Old Town was not a problem. Parking at the pension was free, the rates were reasonable, and the breakfast was outstanding. The rooms were comfortable enough.

Hi Steve,
In Salzburg, try the Hotel Wolf Dietrich. I stayed there recently for several nights, and liked it a lot. The hotel is in two buildings, the original and its annex directly across the street. Very well kept, very friendly. The hotel's restaurant, the Ahrlich, is a great place for dinner - all the produce and meat is locally grown and beautifully prepared. The Hotel Wolf Dietrich is just across the river from the Old Town, about a 10-minute walk. I actually found it to my advantage to not be lodged in the Old Town, as it is picturesque but can be quite congested.
We just returned from Salzburg and stayed at the Am Dom. Room 11 has two bedrooms and easily accommodates 4 people for 94 Euro/nt. If you'd prefer a double for each couple, request of the larger rooms. Herr Bachleitner is very friendly and hospitable. The breakfast is simple, but adequate. the location, on Goldgasse in Altstadt is superb--right down from the Residence Platz.

IF you have around $120/nite, try the Blaue Gans on Getreidegasse. Great location, wonderful restaurant and breakfast. the Karajan rooms are large and run about 129 Euro--higher starting around July, as I recall. Great location, too.
