My husband and I are traveling to Salzburg June 10-11 and are having the hardest time finding a hotel to stay in for just one night due to the European Championships. Just to get an idea of our preference, we were hoping to stay at Star Inn, however, their minimum stay during that time is 3 nights. Does anyone have any ideas? We will be coming from an overnight train from Zagreb and plan on going to Vienna the following night (already have a hotel there).

We stayed at the Goldene Krone a few years ago. Great location, simple clean hotel. It was a little over $100 a night back then, so it's probably more now.

There are also several B&B's just outside the Old Town. They're less than 15 minutes by bus from the Old Town and are around 55€ for 2 people.

I agree with the previous post. The B&Bs on the outskirts of the city are wonderful and quite inexpensive. Go to www.2salzburg.info. Click "accommodation", then "B&B". There are a great number of choices for you. Don't wait too long or you will be out of luck. BTW, my favorite is Gaestehaus Steinerhof on Moosstrasse.

It is on a bus line, about 12 min from downtown.

Get the Salzburg Card at the B&B. It is worth the money.

If you continue to have trouble finding a place, you might call the Salzburg tourist office and enlist their help. (They will have somebody who speaks English.)

We also stayed at Am moos after reading Ira's positive comments and really liked it--great value. The street called Moostrasse is lined with many B&B's that were formerly farmhouses and the bus runs down this street. There was one that looked especially interesting that had a restaurant (very good food) that overlooked a riding arena. It appeared that it may still be an active farm. A taxi from the train station will be very reasonable and it is only about 15 minutes out to Moostrasse.

This might not be far enough outside of Salzburg to avoid the "Championship effect", but try Freilassing. It's an easy trip into Salzburg and there are some hotel in town (I know because I spent three nights there in 2000.

Also, look at Berchtesgaden, it's a short bus trip from Salzburg.

A couple of our favorites in the Altstadt to check out are the Goldenen Ente and the Wiesses Kreuz. I am guessing they are both 3* hotels. Both are very conveniently located near the tourist sites in the old city. They will probably be in the $130 range or perhaps a little higher with the exchange rate being what it is.

Thank you for trying so hard to help us out! Instead of staying over in Salzburg, we are have extended our hotel stay in Vienna (now staying there 3 nights). So now we will still take the overnight train from Zagreb and arrive around 5am. We will then walk around town and see it before the sun rises - any suggestions on a local place for breakfast or places not to be missed before the crowds come out? We will only have our backpacks so luggage shouldn't be an issue unless any places have issues with taking our backpacks around with us - any idea if it will be on the Sound of Music tour? Any suggestions for what to do with the rest of our day in Salzburg before taking the train that evening to Vienna? If y'all have any further suggestions, please pass it along! We stayed at the Sheraton Salzburg Hotel while travelling through town last June. It was reasonably priced and very well located. Good luck!

Do you mean a full size backpack or a daypack? I don't think the SoM tours have storage for a full size backpack; you should check with them first. Salzburg's train station has lockers but June is high season in Salzburg for daytrippers and this year even more so. You'd need luck on your side.

If you do opt to stay over, a quick check on www.hotels.de found a room available on your dates at the Mercure Kapuzinberg for one night at 138 euros. Otherwise, consider staying just over the border in Bad Reichenhall, a pleasant spa town with scenic and frequent bus and train links to Salzburg (we preferred the bus to the train). The Hotel Bayerischerhof has doubles available for 95 euros a night on your days (no 3 night minimum) and it's right across the street from the train/bus station.

FYI, that Mercure was the ONLY hotel in Salzburg itself that came up with availability for your dates on hotels.de you might want to consider booking it ASAP in case you decide you would like to spend the night in Salzburg.
