Salzburg area toboggan runs
We will be staying in the city Centre in Salzburg for New Year (30/12/07 - 2/1/08). I am trying to find a nearby town that has toboggan runs.
I have so far only found details of the Ski shuttle which offers a coach trip from Salzburg to various ski resorts in Austria, this is probably a bit too hardcore and mainly intended for skiers.
I really want somewhere nearby where we can catch a public transport, i.e. train or bus from Salzburg. I don’t want to be tied to a specific coach trip.
Previously we went to Klosters in Switzerland where after a nice lunch in the town, we took a cable car up the mountain and then descended on toboggans hired from the cable car station.
Looking for the same kind of thing, ideally within 1 hour train or bus from Salzburg city centre.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would love an answer for this as well. We considered the ski shuttle but since we have little kids and don't ski we aren't going to do it. Currently I am planning on sledding from Berchtesgaden - the tourist office is sending me some info on it.

Hi adobbing,
I haven't done this so don't have a personal recommendation -- just wanted to pass along this info I found:
http://www.salzburgerland.com/media/...t_Rodeln_e.pdf
It's a pdf from the Salzburgerland tourist office describing the tobaggan runs in the area (English).
Have fun!

Thanks for responses, have now downloaded the PDF about toboggan runs.
Now just trying to figure out which is the best and easiest location to get to from Salzburg, any ideas?
Some sound easier than others particularly where you can catch a cable car in the town centre and hire a toboggan there also.
Not being very fluent in German I would probably shy away from anything that sounded too complicated to sort out.
Taxi rides from the town centre and hiring from sports shops might be too tricky, ideal situation would as we found in Klosters where we hired the toboggans from the cable car station and returned them on the way back down.
where2 - I would be interested in what you find out from tourist office about Berchtesgaden, could you share your findings?
Thanks again!

Just a quick update;
We stayed in Salzburg over New Year and ventured out to St Johann Im Pongau.
It is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes by direct train from Salzburg.
We jumped in a taxi at the station as we were unsure of bus timings, the taxi ride lasted about 5 minutes through the small town to the Hahnbaumalm ski lift area.
Here we were directed to the sports shop where toboggans can be rented for €5.
Then we got on the ski lift €4.90 for a single ticket to the top. A quick 5 minute walk and we were at the start of the Rodelbahn.
3.5 Km of downhill fun with some great views on the way down.
I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
St Johann is a small town but has several Restaurants / Inns for drinks food afterwards.
The walk back from the Hahnbaumalm ski lift to the station takes about 20 minutes and is all down hill.
