topping - any info please! I will be staying here next month. I did not choose the hotel (no say in it, long story), and have no idea about the hotel, location, etc. I found their website, and do know it looks like a small, moderate 3-star. I need a clean hotel in a nice, convenient location, that's all I ask...does anyone know about this specific hotel?

Just got back from that exact place last week!!
We stayed at the Sofitel l'Astor just around the corner from Saint Augustin. Very quiet, very nice, 4 star hotel. We got a good deal at this website: http://parishotels-net.com/.
It's a British site and they will send you a certificate to show that you have prepaid. A little risky but it worked grat for us, no problems. They currently have an excellent special on 4 or 5 Sofitel properties: stay 3 nights, get the 4th free. It also includes a FULL breakfast (at the hotel = 24 euros per person!). It worked out to about $200 per night at a 4 star hotel including breakfast...not bad at all.
Please if you stay in the area, please try the Le Carre restaurant at 12 Place Saint Augustin. It's right on the corner where the 5 or 6 streets come together. We had a fantastic time there (we ended up going 2 nights in a row). Great food, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices (and portions). Most immpressive was the waitstaff, who were VERY helpful in translating the menu and suggesting nice wines, etc. They smashed every stereotype of the rude French waiter!!! Tell them the American and Russian couple from Atlanta said hello!! Have fun...

Hi Zelda,

I don't know your hotel, but I do know the area well, as I've stayed at a nearby hotel on several occasions. So, I'll comment on the location, which may be of interest to you.

The St. Augustin metro stop (just off of Place St. Augustin) is quite convenient. Just around the corner from the metro, facing the square, is a bank (BNP I believe) with about 4 ATM machines for easy access to cash. Across the street from the bank is a Monoprix store, which is so convenient if you need personal items like toothpase, or a few picnic supplies. There are also a few cafes facing Place St. Augustin which are nice if you just want to grab a coffee/drink and relax and people watch -- it's a very busy square!

I wouldn't consider St. Augustin a tourist "hot spot", but it's within easy walking distance (about 10 minutes) of the major department stores, such as Printemps, the Paris Opera house, Rue Faubourg St. Honore, and Place Madeleine.

Because it's not a tourist locale, it gets quiet at night. I like that, but if you're looking for nightime activity, you'll have to go elsewhere.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Paris.
Diane
