Safe place to stay in Naples

We are going to Naples in May and you all have been a tremendous help with the planning. We have booked a Villa in Praiano and are going to see the Amalfi coast with that as our base.

My question pertains to our first day and last two. Our villa is booked from Saturday to Saturday. We arrive at 2:00 pm on Friday and thought maybe we'd just stay in the Naples area that night and then pick up our car Saturday morning (we've heard all the warning about the car but we're going to brave it - and get a nice small car!). We also need a place to stay the following Saturday and Sunday nights. We thought we'd dump the car when we got back to Naples. We have a very early flight Monday morning so Sunday night probably need something really close to the airport.

I heard a number of Fodorites say that there is plenty to see in Naples and that despite all the warnings not to miss it. I have spent a lot of time looking for hotels and have a hard time finding one not laced with warnings. We generally try to stay in the $125-150 usd range but if that is unrealistic to find decent and safe, please tell me.

Thanks
Merri

Merri,
as you say, really in Naples you do not need the car and so I suggest you CHIAJA HOTEL, in the hearth of the center of Naples, so, again, NO car.
www.hotelchiaia.it
The problem, IMO, is that your budget is not enough for this hotel and, maybe, for every good and safe hotel in Naples because, I am sorry, actually the problem is that when you say 150 US$, you're telling a bit less than 100 € and less than 100 € it is hard to find a very comfortable and charming accomodation in the center of Naples.
Otherwise, as back-up solution, I suggest you ALBERGO NAPOLIT'AMO
in the center, also, but not charming as CHIAJA is: www.napolitamo.it
In both cases no problem in your last early morning to reserve taxi by hotel, from hotel to airport.

Have a lovely trip.

Vincenzo

I don't know what the current garbage
situation is but I don't think it has been resolved. I would try to determine that before deciding to stay in Naples

Hi M,

>We thought we'd dump the car when we got back to Naples.

You are going to drive into Naples?

Highly not recommended.

Try http://piazzabellini.hotelsinnapoli.com/
They have dbls for about 100E.

Hi Merri - In view of the drastic drop in tourism due to recent bad publicity, a number of Naples hotels are offering special deals in an effort to attract custom.

If you still want to stay in Naples it might be worth waiting till the last minute ...

Can anyone give me an update on the garbage situation in Naples at this time. We are going to be staying near Naples for a few days in mid May and using it as a jump off for visitng sites in the area. We were also hoping to get a good two days in Naples itself but not so sure now if the garbage situation is really horrible. Anyone been there recently who can give me an update? Thank you. J

No garbage in the center of the town and, in the meantime, still a lot of garbage in the peripheral places of the town.
The forecast makes me NOT optimistic because there are rumors of garbage workers strikes.

How can they strike if they're not picking it up to begin with? You Italians can be so confusing sometimes. (Meant in a kind-hearted way.)

Vincenzo: Thank you for the update. I think I am not going to change my plans as I really do want to visit Naples. I will just hope for the best.

Holly: Would that be the statement, "I want more money for the work I am not doing"? Too funny.

Naples is as safe everywhere as any American city. I have been advised not to go out of my Washington, D.C. hotel at night! Check the USA Italian Embassy site for REAL recommendations. Thousands of Americans are working in the Naples area. Inquire.

GSteed: I am not at all concerned about my safety in Naples. As you can see, my question was about the garbage situation as I had heard that there is still a problem with garbage not being picked up and left laying in the streets. Safety is not a problem for me at all. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Merrisr: I am sorry I highjacked your thread. I wish I could help with hotel recommendations but we are staying on the island of Procida. We thought it would be a fun experience and the price was right. We will use the ferry back and forth to the mainland for tourist activities over the four days we will be there.

Don't mind the higjacking at all. Its nice to finally hear someone say that Naples isn't as dangerous as I have been hearing. Sadly we still haven't settled on a hotel.

Hi Merrisr,

I only visited for 1 day mainly to see the Arch Museum. I stayed at Hotel Pinto Storey*** in the Chiaia district which was a very nice neighborhood, one street over from the high end shopping street.

Nice hotel, easy location. It's just across the small Piazza Amadeus from the metro stop of same name. Easy to get to from Piazza Garibaldi.

Just a question, why Naples instead of say Sorrento which is beautiful and SAFE compared to Naples? Sorrento is a staging place for Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi coast all not to miss places. Yes you can get there from Naples but not quite as easily or safely.

The reason we thought about Naples is because we arrive late in the afternoon the first day and thought we'd just stay in Naples the first night. We are staying at a villa in Praiano for a week of our stay and were going to see the Amalfi coast with that as our base. Since We also need a place the last two nights.

Lastly - many fodorites have said not to miss Naples as part of our visit.
