Ryanair to go trans-Atlantic

From the International Herald Tribune "Budget airline Ryanair plans to offer trans-Atlantic flights as cheap as 10 euros ($12.70) before taxes to several U.S. cities from Britain and Ireland, a company official said, according to a newspaper report Sunday."

Finally, maybe this will put some pressure on all the others to adjust prices downward.

I just chose a random date on the VA website and found tickets for £294.50 (including taxes) for a London-New York round trip. That's nigh on 7000 miles for less than £300.

Not by any stretch of the imagination could that be called expensive.

Hm, well I wouldn't book with Ryanair even if it were free ! I want to know I can get back without paying a fortune for a last minute flight when theirs is cancelled.

I have this horrible vision in my head. 8 hours in a seat like a bench, with my knees jammed against the seat in front and everywhere I look I see blue and yellow. I also spend $1,000 buying those stupid raffle tickets.

I actually like RyanAir, but not if it means more than 2-3 hours at a time.

Is that really so different from what people readily accept on Monarch flights to Florida, Thomson flights to The Gambia or Thomas Cook flights to Goa?

There's nothing revolutionary about cramped long-haul budget flights: literally thousands of people take them every day from Manchester and Gatwick.

This weekend I looked at the list of corporations in my 401K and to my surprise, there was Ryanair--in the top 10!

I flew it from Paris to Rome and didn't find it any more crowded than the my AA flight from NY to Paris.

Note the caveat Eur10 BEFORE TAXES (& fees, I presume). On transatlantic economy fares, taxes and fees can be as much as GBP230.
