Ryan Air - Can this possibly be right?
I checked on a flight from Frankfurt (HHN) to Montpellier on June 21 and it is showing a price of .01 euro. Can this possibly be right? My husband needs to go from Frankfurt Germany to Provence. Have I put in the right airports?

Yes, Ryanair frequently have such promotions - you just need to be aware that a) taxes are not included b) the baggage allowance is small, and the re is a fee for checked in bags c) Although I really like Ryanair, you are on your own if something goes wrong - If you miss your check in Tough. If the flight is delayed or cancelled, ditto.

Yes, the price is right.
The baggage allowance is much aligned, and is not that small - - 55 pounds (33 in checked baggage, 22 in carryon)- - how much does one person need?
See http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs....ggageallowance
See also http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/dests.php?loc=HHN to make sure you understand where Frankfurt (<i><b>Hahn</b></i
airport actually is. Several links at the bottom of the page on the airport, local transportation etc. Similarly for Montpellier - - http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/dests.php?loc=MPL
I have never gotten one of the "one cent" fares, but I have flown tis wonderful airline many times, including with my family of five, and enjoyed a much richer itinmerary, by virtue of fares of less than 1 or 2 pounds (GBP) - - plus, of course, taxes of 10-15 pounds per person, if I recall correctly.
Best wishes,
Rex

Rex, this is very interesting. Possibly the baggage varies from which airport ? I flew Ryanair from London Stansted to Palermo in October ( a hugely expensive 27GBP including taxes), and was told allowance was 15KG as check in. My wife and I were two KG over, and the check in attendant suggested we remove something from our main bag, and put it into our small carry on back pack - which we did.
I know Ryanair have just changed their policy on checking in bags, so that may have changed - one intersting poit was that they now mentined shared bags- if, for example, my wife and I packed one suitcase of 30KG (I am assuming 15KG limit) It would be taken as one of us having no luggage, and one being 15KG overweight - this is in an attempt to encourage hand luggage only.
Please don't get me wrong, I am very pro Ryanair - they , and their imitators have allowed me to become a Budget jetsetter - taking 2 or 3 trips a year.

From Ryanair
Checked baggage
Checked baggage allowance is 15kg per person (no infant allowance). Passengers may not use the unused allowances of others. No pooling/sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even when travelling together on the same reservation. Any excess over 15kg will be chargeable at the rate of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local currency equivalent. For health and safety reasons Ryanair will not accept any individual item exceeding 32 kilos and with combined dimensions of more than 81cms height, 119cms wide and 119cms depth.

Cabin baggage
Only one small item of hand baggage per person, weighing no more than 10kg and with dimensions of less than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, may be carried into the aircraft cabin.
See paragraph headed ‘Prohibited Articles’ for items not permitted in the cabin of the aircraft.

Rex, one of my concerns is where exactly is HHN airport? I looked at the map and it appears to be outside of Frankfurt. As long as there is a shuttle of some sort available, it would be doable. Montpellier would not be a problem since we would be picking up a car.
Backing up a bit, we would also have to get from Lyon to Frankfurt (a business meeting arose in the middle of the trip). Haven't figured that one out. Expedia showed an outrageous airfare.

Re Lyons to Frankfurt: bahn.de shows a train itinerary leaving 07:38 with a change in Geneva, Biel and Basel arriving Frankfurt 15:53. It shows Lyon Part Dieu as the station in response to my query on Lyons. Price is Euro 125 pp.

From Ryanair's website
"for bookings after 16th March, Ryanair is increasing each passenger’s luggage allowance from the current 25kgs to 30kgs (comprising 10kgs carry-on and 20kgs checked-in luggage) (5) all passengers travelling with checked in luggage who book after 16th March will now pay a fee of £2.50 (€3.50) per bag, per flight if booked in advance on the website, or £5.00 (€7.00) per bag, per flight if presented unbooked at the airport."
So it's pretty much what you'd get with most airlines outsidce of the US - including the full cost ones

Hi Ronda,
The shuttle to Hahn takes 2 hours(!) - more info at:
http://www.bohr-omnibusse.de/en/home.php
Re: Lyon to Frankfurt, the "best" fare will be a cheap return ticket (about $260) on Lufthansa, just leave a Saturday night between the outbound and fictitious return segments. Bookable at:
www.lufthansa.com
If your husband is staying in Frankfurt over a Saturday night, he might also consider flying out of Marseille instead of Montpellier. An open jaw MRS-FRA-LYS (Marseille-Frankfurt-Lyon) itinerary on Lufthansa runs $311 and allows him to avoid the Hahn craziness. This fare is again only available with a Saturday night stay in Frankfurt and can be booked on lufthansa.com as well.
Hope this helps,
Andre

It's a little bit amusing that many on this site will look at 10 and 15 kg and think "oh, that's not very much!"
...but when expressed as 55 pounds of luggage (which is what it is!), I never hear many responding with "oh, I cannot get by with so little!"
Once upon a time (over a decade ago), I used to travel all over the US (and to a lesser extent, to and around Europe) with a full-size HP Laser Jet 3 (or 4 or 5), and together with its case, that was right at 66 pounds (30 kg), so I know what it's lilke to travel with an "oversized" checked item like that...
...but for "normal" overseas (personal) travel, I cannot imaging why any one (or any couple) would elect to travel with a 30 kg suitcase (even if it is for two people)...
...unless a bowling ball is essential to your travels! (or a LaserJet printer)

The info about the travel from Frankfurt (the city) to "Frankfurt" <b>Hahn</b> airport is all correct as indicated here. That's why I emphasized that it's important that you understand where this flight actually originates. It is NOT Frankfurt itself, nor even particularly close.
Using an example close to me, it's further from Frankfurt to Hahn...
...than from Frankf(B>ort (Kentucky) to Louisville. I can just imagine the howls if there was an effort to label a "satellite" terminal as "Louisville East" (Frankfort) airport!
(Of course, they're trying to label Rockford [Illinois] as a "Chicagoland" airport!)

Thanks for all the info. It is really helping us make decisions. We can't stay over on a Saturday night so Luftansa is out. If he gets a cheap ticket on Ryan Air, the long shuttle ride won't be so hard to swallow.

Ronda - so long as you know about the fact this airport is nowhere near Frankfurt and the options available for getting there you'll be fine.
It's when people use Ryanair thinking they are flying to Frankfurt, Stockholm or wherever and then are disappointed to find themselves still a couple of hours away on arrival it's when a bit of planning wouldn't have gone amiss. You are armed with all the info you could need.
