Just don't book a room at the Tavistock Hotel. It's huge, caters to tour groups, and has very charmless rooms. Royal National is a little better.

If you type Russell Square AND hotels in the text search you'll bring up lots of strings with suggestions. St. Margarets Hotel seems to be a favorite. For 10 days, you might want to consider an apartment rental (more space). Type in London AND apartments for websites.

When I was first traveling on an extreme budget I would always stay at the Celtic Hotel. Now that I could spend more I still stay at the Celtic because I like the people there and I love the location, just a few yards from the Russell Square Tube stop.

The address is 61, 621, 63 Guilford Street; the managers are Isabel and Raffaello Gerra. (Raffaello?s sister also runs St. Margaret's hotel, a friend of mine loves it there. Both are Spartan but very clean with an excellent breakfast.)

This number may be old as far as code goes, but from the U. S. one would dial 011-44-207-837-6737.

To find it walk out of the Tube stop, turn left the first close/alley, turn left, stop at The Friend At Hand for a pint, continue a few steps to the street (you?re face the President hotel) turn left and you?re there. If you have further questions email Diablo at [email protected]

They don?t take credit cards (or didn?t by last year) but there is an ATM right across the street.

p.s.

If you like the Celtic ask for an extended stay rate.

Have you considered londontown.com for a good rate? There is also priceline.com where u can bid on a good hotel in that general area for less. Before you go to priceline check out biddingfortravel.com to see what hotels in that zone have been awarded.

By the looks of what people have reported you can get a 4 star hotel in Bloomsbury/Marble arch area for around $75-80 plus tax (about 17.5%) (Marriott, Thistle Marble Arch). If that first bid fails you can add in Mayfair where there are a lot of great 4 star hotels.

So, start with Marble Arch/Bloomsbury zone for about $75 if you get nothing you can either wait 72 hours and rebid or immediately add another zone such as Mayfair/Soho for a free rebid.

Remember you may not get a place close to Russel Sq and once the bid is placed and accepted, its FINAL. No refunds.

Here is a list of hotels that have been won on priceline in that zone.

Bloomsbury - Marble Arch

4 Star

Radisson Edwardian Marlborough
Radisson SAS Portman Radisson Edwardian Grafton
Thistle Marble Arch
Thistle Bloomsbury
Euston Plaza
Hotel Russell
Churchill Inter-Continental
Grange White Hall Hotel
Marriott Marble Arch Novotel London Euston
Melia White House

3 Star

London Ryan
The Bloomsbury Park
Thistle Kings Cross/Islington
The Selfridge
Le Meridien The Cumberland

2 Star

Comfort Inn Kings Cross
