Rugby World Cup - is your team playing?

BTW, northie, I didn't mean to ignore your post about Aussie Rules - about which I know as much as you do about Rugby by the sound of it. Glad that you enjoyed a Day 31.
I have watched the odd match on TV, and so far as I can tell the most striking thing about it is that...there are no rules! [i suspect that's an old joke, but none the worse for that].

annhig, I suppose the next rugby-related issue is, which of the current England team is going to be first on Strictly Come Dancing.....?>>
that's an easy one, Patrick - Billy Vunapola, obviously. He's definitely got the figure for it.
Cath - what DOES it mean, in Aussie slang? [if you are able to tell us without getting banned of course].

Meant to add that in Oz, if you "root, root, root for the home team" you are most likely practicing the world's oldest profession.>>
really??? weird how the meanings of words change in different cultures.
as for rooting around in my drawers I shall leave my briefs strictly alone.

Looks to me like we're going to get Australia in the quarters #notcountingchickensreally.
It's been a wonderful tournament for quality rugby. Some real surprises in the games.
Here's to next weekend

Question about "home team"? U.S. term, just means your local team or the team hosting the game. From very old song, "Take me out to the [base]ball Game"
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Just buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.

Yes, I'm sure an Aussie Rules crowd would have fun singing that, judging by what they shout when the umpire signals a goal.

Ah, c'mon Ann...don't be like that!>>
Margo - you would have enjoyed the conversation between Max Boyce and John Humphreys on radio today, the general consensus from those two doughty welshmen being that they will support anyone against the English. ditto every other country.

I know that, Cath, but it doesn't answer the question as to why "rooting for the home team" means in Australia what it is said to mean upthread.

seems like the phrase is gaining something in translation!
anyway, back to the rugby. another great match this evening, especially if you're Rumanian! the Canadians were left out in the cold, so to speak, running out of steam in the last 15 minutes and losing 15 v 17.
in the night's second match, Uruguay scored twice [which was 200% more world cup tries than they had managed before] but were unable to over come Fiji in a somewhat bad-tempered match. They are brave, some of those Uruguayan players, taking on the man-mountains that play for Fiji.
2 unexpectedly good matches - a just reward for the 30,000+ spectators that pruned up for each match. and in pouring rain too.
