Hi, zil!
When referring to those two cities, I don't think you can use "excellent" and "inexpensive" in the same sentence, although "outrageous" and "rip-off" seem to fit well together (in high season, anyway). Have you thought of staying nearby and travelling in by bus or train: say, Lucca for Florence, and Monselice for Venice? There are some nice apartments for rent in those areas that might get reasonably close to a definition of "excellent". Alternatively, do a search on this site for the name "Pier Carlos Sandei"; he has a couple of flats in Venice that he rents to travellers, and although we can't afford him on our forthcoming family trip (as we would have needed the larger of the two apartments he offers), if you're travelling solo you might be able to afford the small one.

Hi Zil,

You can find pleasant rooms in hotels and B&B's in Venice for about 100E/night dbl.

Try www.venere.com

As Alan has so well illustrated, the meaning of the terms "excellent" and "inexpensive" are totally subjective and in his own case that means staying "nearby."

I totally disagree: First, asking this sort of question leaves the answer open to interpretation and can really accomplish little. After you eget everyone's "recommendation" you STILL have to decide for yourself.

Second, Do yourself a favor..go onto venere or other discounter/booking websites and look around first and THEN ask for recommendations about specific properties...I think you'll find the end result is much more useful and reasonable and less a waste of time..both yours and those who are trying to respond in a decent and well-meaning manner.

In Florence you could try to hotel Bellettinin- www.hotelbellettini.com- there are probably 100 favorable comments on this board alone.
Double room(not in the annex) is about 140 euros.
Much luck
Fluffy
p.s. do a text search here under budget hotels.
