Great value Don Curro is as central as it gets, right in the middle of everything and ten min walking to the Malagueta beach: http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/hoteldoncurro.en.html

Do not stay on the beach in October..stay in the center of town.
I stayed a few nights last fall at the Vincci Hotel Posada del Patio, which is in a great location.
Modern place...most likely more expensive than Don Curro, though.

Do not know the AC but location looks good.

Excellent location, great guest reviews: http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/acmalagapalacio.en.html
You will be close to one of my favourite cafés in Spain, Casa Aranda is an institution in town: http://www.casa-aranda.net/

AC Hotel Málaga Palacio by Marriott is AMAZING, 4 star hotel but should be 5 stars, the views from the restaurant on roof top are marvellous.

Malaga always as a base, is just in the middle of the province and Ronda by night in october might be just a bit lonely place...
