Rome-Unusual places to visit.
Help Wanted- Calling all Fodorites,
I need some help with planning my first trip to Rome (next week). I have highlighted some sights with the help of Eyewitness Travel. But I am also looking for a few hidden jewels to find and discover. Maybe a quick side trip.
I would also love a few restaurant suggestions that are worth trying , not too expensive and a tourist trap. In Paris, I fell in the show and dinner trap at the Moulin Rouge. The show was great but the dinner??? My husband still laughs about it.
Any help would be appreciated. It is so overwheling! Next week when I sitting Rome with a glass of vino I will feel much better.
Jessy

We were in rome for four nights in February this year.
I researched a number of web sites and ended up having an enjoyable meal every night, none of which in any way could be described as touristy.
I will look up the details and let you know tommorow.
The heading of your post could reduce responses1
Average cost of 60-70 Euros, including wine.

I'll be in Rome in a few weeks. Worth returning to are:
Pizzaria Remo in Testaccio. Take the Metro to Piramide and walk down Via Marmorrata for a few blocks turn left into Testaccio and ask anyone for Pizzaria Remo. Its a heighborhood institution and rocks evenings. (There will be no tourists.)
'Gusto, at the corner of Via della Frezza and Via del Corea, is a flashy spot where you can get a full meal or any component thereof, from cheese plates to select salumi. Its a few blocks northwest of Piazza Spagna. Many of Rome's glitterati show up nightly and its a lot of fun.

This may not be sufficiently unusual as to your liking, but, Al Pompiere in the Jewish Quarters. Very good family-style restaurant, very good Roman food - braised ox-tail, fried zuchinni flowers, whatever is market-fresh as specials of the day (wild mushrooms when we were there); wines are decent and inexpensively priced ( we ordered a bottle from Sardinia that went very well with our food).
Our hotel concierge was pleasantly surprised when we asked for directions, as she said that the restaurant is popular among locals.
BTW, reservations is a must.

I've written an 'Ides of March' Julius Caesar Assassination Walk that is way to long to post.
It takes you from the night before when he is in the 'Shrine of Mars' which is in the Regia in the Forum, to his house also in the Forum, leaving the next day and to the assassination site (~1km away). And back to the Forum and Capitoline Hill with the conspirators and finally the crowd's cremation of Caesar on the 18th.
If you're interested e-mail me and I'll send it to you, just put ROME in the subject line so I don't delete it with all the spam. Regards, Walter
