Rome to Sorrento-Help!
My partner and I arrive at Fiumicino airport in Rome on a Tuesday morning at 9:30am and would very much like to get to Sorrento before nightfall. Our problem is that we arrive with two standard bicycles in boxes and a very large hockey bag. We understand from Fodors that Marozzi, a Rome-based bus line, runs direct buses to Sorento from Rome's Stazione Tiburtina daily Mon-Thurs at 3pm. This sounds great as the fewer transfers the better. Does anyone know 1-Our best bet to get from the airport to Stazione Tiburtina? 2-Once arrived at Tiburtina, will the Marozzi bus line accept all this luggage? 3-Does this 3pm bus departure put us in Sorrento by nightfall? 4-If the bus will not accept us with all our luggage, would there be some other public transportation way to get to Sorrento the same day with our luggage? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you read Italian www.marozzivt.it If you can figure out the website you can select your seats online. The Marozzi bus is not as popular as the trains and therefore usually not full. Plenty of storage under the bus. To get from the airport to Tiburtina station you could use www.limoservicerome.com Let them know about your luggage as they have large vans as well as cars. I'm not sure what you could do all day while you are waiting for your bus to leave with all that luggage. The Tiburtina station is not somewhere you would want to hang out. The 3:00 bus will put you in Sorrento at 7.

Hello Kybourbon again. We were just curious--in your reply to our message you indicate, "The Tiburtina station is not somewhere you want to hang out" We were wondering if you mean there is nothing to do at the station while waiting for our bus or whether you mean it is not a particularly safe place to wait for a bus?
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

It's a little on the seedy side. Lot's of gypsies and I don't believe there would be anywhere to store your luggage until the bus departure time. There is nothing to do either. You have a long time between your flight arrival and your bus departure.
Although you could take the train from Termini it would be a little more difficult with all that luggage. Especially trying to put it on the Circuvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento. The one advantage to the train would be you could store your luggage and explore Rome during the day or depart for Sorrento on a morning train. The big advantage to the bus is putting your luggage on and not having to worry about watching it or making changes.

Taking the Marozzi bus from Tiburtina Station is probably a good idea, as it avoids having to change trains in Naples (bad idea with bicycles), going down escalators, and taking the crowded Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento. NOT SOMETHING TO DO WITH BICYCLES!!!!!!!
Don't confuse the commuter train from Fiumicino to Tiburtina Station (every 15 mins., fare 5.00 Euros) with the nonstop train to Termini Station. They are different trains, and you'll want the one to Tiburtina.
Be careful when on the train, which stops at several suburban stations where sometimes "shady" characters board and begin "roaming" the train corridor in hunt for tired, sleepy and jet lagged tourists! Keep a close key on your wallet and personal belongings.
Same advice when waiting for the bus at the Tiburtina Station. The enclosed waiting room will be safer (but I don't know whether you'll be allowed to bring in the bikes).
Marozzi may also charge for the bikes, I'm not sure.

I have been reading your thread so I might as well jump on the bandwagon.
You can hire a van to take you all the way to Sorrento which would be alot less hassle and stress free. If you split the cost it shouldnt be too much, there are alot of limo services with vans that have been recommended here.
I paid about 250 euro one time from FCO directly to the hotel in Sorrento, when I split that with my friend we decided it was well worth it because we had heavy luggage on that trip.
You can bargain with limo companies too especially if they have just booked a drop off at FCO and have to drive back to Sorrento anyway. Something to think about.

Hi Moe,
When considering safety in Italy keep in mind that the vast majority of crime is theft by stealth - grabbing an unattended suitcase - not violent crime - mugging.
Just be aware of who is around you and don't let anyone touch you.
As they said in "Casablanca", "There are wultures everywhere".

I agree with GAC about trying to change trains in Naples with all that luggage. The train from Naples to Sorrento is crowded and makes lots of stops. The bus is 15.50 euro with a few euro(4?) seat reservation fee. It makes 2 stops -Pompeii and Vico Equense but only long enough to let people board. Drops you at the Sorrento train station about one block from the main square Piazza Tasso.

Thank you all again for all the info everyone took the time to send us re getting from the airport to Sorrento. It really helps. Appreciate that a limo service would be the way to go, but were on a rather tight budget so after considering all your great advice, the Marozzi bus looks like our best bet.
