Rome to Ravello

Hello Fodorites. We are thinking of train from FCO to Termini then onto I believe Salerno to get to Ravello but it sounds really exhausting. I do no want to drive on the coast again if I can help it. Any other suggestions. Assume I could check flight from Rome to Naples?

Thanks for any feedback. Anything you would like to share about Ravello also welcome. We will be there in September for four nights I believe!

Flying to Napoli would be much more of a circus, I think. Getting from the Napoli airport to the train to Salerno is more hustle & bustle then the simple train from FCO to Termini, then switching to the 3 hour train to Salerno, where you can just sit back and relax. Salerno itself at the train station is very easygoing and no stress (unlike Naples), and from there you can get a cab (or the scheduled bus) to Ravello.

If you are flying into FCO anyway why not take a domestic flight to Naples? From Naples airport there is a bus that goes direct to Sorrento, (curreriviaggi.it) From Sorrento you could get a private car transfer to Ravello. You can Google for the prices of that.
Or depending on your budget, get a private car transfer from Naples to Ravello.
This is the simplest most stress free way in my opinion. ITA is the name of the Italian domestic carrier, we are using them in an upcoming trip to Italy.
If arriving in Rome on an overseas flight you just collect your luggage, clear passport control and then follow the signs to the domestic terminal. It's pretty straightforward.

Thank you. I've looked at ITA and it seems that he only flight to Naples is around 1 or 2 PM. Can't remember which...and we arrive at 8 AM, Is it necessary to book the train ahead as we likely won't know exact timing? is this Trenitalia?

Trenitalia gives you all the options, but the crummy thing is this: the RE regional train Roma Termini - Salerno is cheap, but takes 4 hours or so. The fast trains (2 hours or so) require either a high flexible fare, or you can get a cheap fare but are committed to a specific train, such that if your plane comes in late or there is any other kind of mishap you are out of luck.

Assuming you are arriving in Rome on a long distance flight, arriving early morning, I would just either take the next train to Salerno (no pre-booking and just decide on the day whether you want the fast or slow train) which would be relaxing or, perhaps better, leave your luggage at Roma Termini and go for a walk and breakfast before catching a high speed train to Naples and onwards to Salerno. After a long flight, I find getting some gentle exercise the best antidote to tiredness. I'd catch the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi for the fresh air and, with luggage, I'd take a taxi from Amalfi to Ravello if the bus is busy. I would hate having to catch an onward flight to Naples (and unless it's on the same ticket as your ticket from home, you'll have to allow a cushion of time in case your incoming flight is delayed).

Thanks all. One other note, there seem to be a few options for the station in Salerno but from what I can read, I believe the correct one is simply called Salerno?

Yes, Trenitalia calls it Salerno plain and simple.
