When in Siena, we stayed at the Borgo Grondaie (www.borgogrondaie.com). It was convenient with a car, yet not to far from the old town of Siena, had beautiful grounds, a pool, and had apartments with kitchenettes if you prefer. Was a little hard to find, but was fairly inexpensive compared to other places I had looked at. We day tripped from there as Siena is fairly centrally located in Tuscany. Although not one of the more popular destinations, we really liked Volterra as a hill town to visit.

Put "Henry" and "StuDudley" into the Search box (without the quotation marks, of course). Both gentlemen have compiled itineraries of Tuscany that they are prepared to e-mail on request.
And yes, a swimming pool in August is a good thing to have...
