Rome to Capri

So my honeymoon trip is fast approaching...my bride and I arrive in Rome and will make our way to Capri for our first three nights. We want to enjoy this trip as much as possible but have seen that the cost of a car is $400-500. Is the train from Rome to wherever we catch the hydrofoil an okay way to travel? And how do we go about doing that once we pick up our bags at customs?

Thanks in advanvce!

Go to the Rome Airport train station and buy a ticket to Naples - this will take you 1st on the Airport Express to Rome's Termini station where you switch to a train to Naples (about 1.5 hrs from Rome) and then taxi to the Naples port for a ferry (cheaper) or hydrofoil (faster) to Capri.

Hi Jl,

Upon exiting Customs (Use the Nothing to Declare gate) follow the signs and the people to the train station.

You want the Leonardo da Vinci express to Roma TE.

From there you take the train to Naples Centrale.

You can buy 2 for 1 tickets on the hi-speed AV train for 39E in 1 cl or 33E in 2cl.

Choose "ticketless"

You will get a confirmation number to show to the conductor.

Allow yourself about 3 hr from the time of your scheduled landing to get to the Roma TE station. If you are too early, there is a nice self-serve cafeteria at Roma TE.

In Naples, take a cab to the Mollo Belvedere docks to get your boat to Capri.

Enjoy your honeymoon.

ira,

Should I buy my train tickets now or when get to the station? I assume the three hour thing is to allow for customs?

Also, is the savings really worth it or should I just bite the bullet and get a car and driver?

Hi J,

How long it takes to get through immigration depends on how many international flights are arriving at the same time.

Last Sept my flight arrived about 7:30 a.m. It must have been the only one. There was a bit of a line at one booth, but I saw that there was an agent sitting at the other side of the booth and no one was lining up there.

Rather than joining the line like everyone else, I zipped over, asked if he was open, got my passport stamped, and went on to baggage claim. Had my bag in 5 minutes and away I went. I was at Termini in 60 minutes after landing!

Buon viaggio!

Hi jl,

>Should I buy my train tickets now or when get to the station?

You are unlikely to get the 2 for 1 fare if you wait until you get to Italy.

>I assume the three hour thing is to allow for customs?

No. Customs takes no time at all. Immigration can hold you up for about 0:45 hr, but the most likely reason for such a long delay is your baggage taking forever.

>Also, is the savings really worth it or should I just bite the bullet and get a car and driver?<

A car from FCO to Naples Mollo Belvedere will be more like 450E not $. That's a lot of gelato.

You're not likely to save more than about 0:30 hr.

I suggest splurging on a cab from Naples Centrale to Mollo Belvedere in Naples.

The train ride to Naples is part of the adventure and fun of travel.

Happy honeymoon.

Not to correct Ira, but the port in Naples is Molo Beverello. Just didn't want jliven to be confused if looking for signs.
