Rome to Amalfi
Does anybody know how much it costs to hire a driver to take us from Rome to either Amalfi or Positano, wait while we walk around and have lunch, and then take us on to Sorrento to catch the hydrofoil? I'm guessing $300 or so, but I'm hoping it's less! thanks

It's expensive. Private One-way Naples airport to Amalfi alone runs 150$ Rome-Amalfi is probably around 600$. Rome-Amalfi-Sorrento? Don't know about the waiting around part. You'll get lots of post here about better ways to go.

our plan is that after three days in Rome we are going to spend three nights in Capri, but we thought before getting the hydrofoil to Capri we'd like to spend a few hours in one of the Amalfi coast towns -either Amalfi or Positano, have lunch, take a little walk and then either get a ferry from there or the hydrofoil from Sorrento. but we don't want the hassle of having to drag our suitcases around positano or whereever and figured with a driver that's taken care of. but don't know if we want to spend that much. I guess by the time you take a train from Rome to Naples and then a couple of taxis, the cost adds up any way, tho.

A good idea would be to train to Naples and then have a driver pick you up at the station for a day on the AC, dropping you off at Sorrento at the end of the day for your boat.
There are a number of drivers who are recommended here, try Francesco. You may have to search here.

That's worth checking out but I wonder if the cost would wind up the same - the train to Naples plus the driver in and around Amalfi, vs. driver from Rome to Amalfi. but I guess when you get a driver from Rome you have to pay for his trip in both directions. Thanks - that's something to consider.
