Rome Rental Car Pick-up
Hi, all,
I am traveling to Italy in September and have a rental car-related question.
We are staying in Rome for the first four days of our trip, during which time we won't have a rental car. Our next destination is Montalcino (southern Tuscany). I'd like to pick up a rental car at a place where I don't have to deal with much city driving and have easy access to the road(s) heading to Tuscany. Normally, I'd just go to the airport and rent a car there. However, airports usually charge higher rates for rental cars, and FCO airport is well west of the city, so I am not sure how good a pick-up spot it is.
What suggestions would any of you have for a place to pick up the rental car to provide easy access to Tuscany?
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I have planned a trip to Rome & Tuscany at the end of June. We also fly into Rome with a few days and then head out to our villa in Tuscany. After all my research (and discussions with friends who travel and drive in Italy often)we booked our car through Auto Europe and will pick it up at the Rome Downtown Office, 38 A Via Sargedna. This is located right off the Via Veneto inside the city wall. I understand it is quite easy to head out of the city from here. Since we are staying in Piazza Navona this seemed to make sense.
Though I am interested in the suggestion of training to Orvieto to pick up the car since we plan on stopping in Orvieto for a few hours and lunch before heading out to our villa in near Arrezzo. I don't know the cost for this and wonder if it just adds more trouble???

Thanks for the feedback.
Unfortunately, I have my entire itinerary booked, stopping at Orvieto at the end, rather than the start, of a 14-day itinerary. So, that probably doesn't make sense for me.
I'll check out the Via veneto rental office.
Any other thoughts are certainly welcome. I'm staying at the mecenate Placae hotel, just up from the Colisseum and kitty corner to Santa Maria Maggiore church.
Thanks.

jh6000, I just returned from Italy and I did the same thing. We picked up our rental on the way out of Rome heading to Tuscany. We picked it up at VIA DEL GALOPPATOIO 33

I was very nervous about getting out of Rome but it was really no problem at all. From that location you really never have to go one small streets. It's easy to get out of town.
