Rome neighborhoods

I know it's been done before but the search engine seems to be down!

What is the best area (neighborhood) to stay in while in Rome?
We want to be close to many sites, easy access to transportation, dining ect. Not to expensive.
It is easier to book rooms when you know the area your looking for.
Thank you for answering this over done question!

When I was in Rome, we stayed in a hostel near the train station... but we still walked everywhere. It was easy to get around. There is a Metro, but we never took it. One of the areas which we discovered the last day, but wished we could explore more was the Trestevare (sp?). I know this doesn't exactly answer your question, but maybe it can spark some more posts to help.

HAPPY TRAVELS!

The historic center - Pantheon/Piazza Navona/Campo de' Fiori area. Give us a price range for hotels and I'm sure you'll get lots of great suggestions.

I agree with MFNYC in terms of convenience and charm.
There are some bargain hotels in a few okay streets around the train station and I'm glad americaine enjoyed it,but I don't like that neighborhood as a whole, compared to others.

We just got back from Rome a couple of weeks ago, and we stayed at Hotel Navona. It is in the Piazza Navona/Pantheon neighborhood. Less than 2 minute walk to the Pantheon. We were SOOO thrilled with the location. I think it "made" the trip for us. We walked everywhere we went, except the Vatican. We went to the Trevi fountain and Spanish Steps every night, it was that close.

The web address is www.hotelnavona.com The owners were wonderful. It's by no means luxury, but the rooms were clean and the bed was comfy. It's a two-star. Our triple room was 125 Euros. I couldn't find anything that low in that area. Hope you check it out!

Cricket

We stayed at Hotel Navona also. Excellent location! We had a twin room for 118 euro, very clean but definitely budget. We walked everywhere even the vatican was close proximity.
Trastervere was interesting we took a EnjoyRome tour there.
{Cricket we were at the Navona same time you were. Was that your stroller parked in the lobby?!!} PJ

We were in Rome in February and stayed in the Pantheon area as well. We loved it. I can also highly recommend our hotel, Albergo Santa Chiara. We found it on this site. The area is wonderful. Historic, charming, centrally located.

As MFNYC said, I'd give the nod to the Centro Storico, the historic center of Rome, the area which includes the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Campo di Fiori. For a second choice, I'd pick the area around the Spanish Steps.

PJ,

Yep, that was our stroller. I remember talking to you about your trip. You were going with your son, right? How was it? We had the most wonderful time. I liked it a lot better than Florence, where we went the next week. Yes, the hotel definitly was budget. Surprised there was no TV, but we didn't need the TV. Would have liked to have more than a roll and coffee (good coffee, though) at breakfast. I'd stay there again. That price for us was including the crib, which most places charge about 20 Euros a night. Good deal.

Message;Cricket

I did a trip report if you click my name you will find it! We would stay at Navona again also. Never made it to breakfast, we did get a little sick in Rome.
We thought the owner was great{when my son was sick his mother came to our room to offer help!} Loved Rome but Paris still has my heart.
