I think - operative word: think - that the main public celebration is in the evening in the Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano.
Closures? I don't know, but in Siracusa (which is admittedly not at all in the same league as Rome) there was no public transport. Everything else was open: museums, archeological sites, restaurants. I don't remember whether stores were open or not; I'm not a great shopper.

Hi Walter - The Vatican and Musei Capitolini are listed as closed on May 1.

I would think the Colosseo/forum would be open.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Eloise and Steve.
I had always just assumed it was a *major holiday* but I noticed that Context Rome has a tour that day of San Clemente and the underground Houses of John and Paul and that got me to wondering about closures.
If I take this tour I will be in the area so maybe I'll swing by the Piazza if it sounds like something is going on.
Thanks Again...Regards, Walter
