Rome in January (Winter)
Hi there,
I will be travelling in Europe starting from 1st January. First stop is Rome to Venice to Milan.
Any advice for traveling in the winter months? What is the usual temp? Does it snow/rain often?

My husband and I were in Rome last January and loved it! It was our 4th time there, and perhaps my favorite, as there were not nearly as many tourists and the weather was fine-in the 50's and 60's as I recall and some sun. We were amazed to be able to walk right into St. Peter's and the Vatican Museum without standing in line at all.

I was in Venice on Boxing Day one year and was the coldest I've ever been. It was nice and sunny on the mainalnd but freezing fog out in the lagoon. Take lots of layers including your warmest coat, hat, gloves etc. (I know it's not always like this but it could be.) Also take an umbrella.

I love Italy off season. the tourist sights are delightfully free of crowds. But as caroline mentioned, dress in layers for warmth. Many sights to visit are old stone buildings, especially churches, that are not heated much if at all. Sometimes its a relief to go outside to be warmed by the sun. However, you will find restaurants quite warm by comparison, so being able to remove layers is important. And the weather is an excellent excuse to enjoy as many thick hot chocolates as possible.
