Well, most anyplace is safe. the most central area would be the historic center (centro historico).

It would help to know what you want to see and how long you will be in Rome. As nytraveler notes, many places are quite safe, it depends on what you want to be near. The historic center includes the colosseum, forum, etc. A lot of people like to be not too far from the train station if they are planning train travel. Other people like to be near Piazza Navona or other piazzas or the Trevi Foundation because they are busy and exciting. Some people like to stay near the Vatican, where it's a little quieter, but still within walking distance of several things. It just depends on your goals for the trip.

I have no idea how much money you want to spend, but it really does not get much better than this in Rome no matter how many nights you end up staying there:

Most people find the campo di fiorri area very central and inviting.

We enjoyed staying at Hotel Smeraldo.

We always stay (four trips) near Termini simply because it is convenient to the transportation hub of Rome. Nothing is very far apart in Rome.

I've stayed close to the Spanish Steps. I like the fact you're not too far away from the Metro, certainly can walk to many of the other places in "centro storico", and there are plenty of taxi stands around also if you're in a hurry to get somewhere. It's always been very safe for me.

Buon Viaggio,
