We really loved the Alimandi. It isn't exactly central; it's less than a hundred yards from the Vatican wall, but thyat's a great location for St. Peter's and the Vatican museums if they're a central part of your travel plans However, it's not far from a metro stop that will easily get you to central Rome. We had no trouble using it as a base and enjoyed the neighborhood. Some friends of ours who were there recently said there's also a bus that goes by the Vatican that also stops at other major tourist sites for something under 10 euros for a full day ticket (getting on and off where you wish). The folks at the Alimandi are very friendly, there are several; pick-ups and drop-offs at the airport (handy of you're flying in), and the rooftop breakfast is excellent. Runs about 140 euro and up for a double room per night.
