My husband and I are overwhelmed with all of the information on Rome Hotels and have finally narrowed down our choices.

We would love some more reviews(especially concerning a good downtown location and room comfort) on any of the following:
Hotel Alimandi
Hotel Italia
San Carlo
Hotel Alexandra
B&B Fellini
Residenza al Corso

Any additional hotel recommendations would be great!

I have effusively sung the praises of the Hotel San Carlo, and have stayed there twice this past calendar year. I did post on Fodor's "Rants & Raves" about it. The only downsides I can see are the lack of elevator, and the too-small breakfast room. Breakfast, however, can be delivered to your room at no additional charge.

IMO, the service was friendly, the Annex room delightful, and location, right between the Spanish Steps and via del Corso simply cannot be beat!

I can vouch for Hotel Trinita Dei Monti, Via Sistina 91, just a few steps for the famous Church and Spanish Steps. Is a 3 Star hotel, but make certain that you ask for a room in the back..It can be extremely noisy at night, with the vespas going back and forth to the near Pincio.
The location is super..

Hotel Parlamento is just off Via del Corso..much cheaper than Trinita, very clean, modern bathrooms, AC..

I also stayed at the San Carlo a few months ago.

Positives:

- very good location (a minute or 2 from the Spanish Steps, the Metro, higher end shopping)
- free Metro tickets
- very nice double rooms
- spacious bathrooms (in doubles)
- newly remodeled
- free bottled water

Negatives:

- extremely tempermental staff
- no help with reservations (they said they made reservations, but didn't)
- no help with recommendations for dining (told to just walk around)
- no elevator (not such a big deal to most people)


If you do decide to book at the San Carlo, make sure that you request a room far away from the breakfast area, including the prep area. Their dishwasher sounds like a jet engine and continues for several hours in the a.m.

I would probably stay at the San Carlo again, but that's only because I managed to negotiate my way through the staff hostility and now know what to expect.

I have stayed at Alimandi and have no serious complaints. They will pick up and return to the airport for no additional charge. The hotel is near the Vatican, not far from a metro stop. Previously, though, I have read threads voicing the opinion that staying in a more central location is preferrable.

Somebody has to explain to me why it's desireable to stay at a hotel near the Spanish Steps. We've made 5 trips to Rome and 1 or 2 trips to the Piazza de Spagna. The place is teeming with kids and you get accosted every few feet with people trying to sell you something.

I felt that it (Spanish Steps) was convenient because there is a Metro stop, a super market, and lots of shopping within a quick walk. I saw a lot more tourists than teenagers hanging out around the Spanish Steps.
