Rome Hotel
We will be in Rome for 4 nights in April and I want to stay in a nice hotel without having to take out a loan to afford it. Around $250 night would be fine. I do want to be accessible to all the popular sights. We will also be going to Vatican city as a day trip and to Pompeii hopefully. Any suggestions on hotels for Rome?

Um, the Vatican is IN the middle of Rome - so it's not a day trip. Suggest you get a map and locate the major sights.
Pompeii is a VERY long day trip - I would check opening and closing times before you make your plans.
As for the hotel - how many is "we"?

We recently stayed at Hotel Campo de Fiori and really loved it. It is very well located, including walking distance to the Vatican. Plus it had a lovely rooftop deck. But there are lots of great hotels in Rome. You might want to search a site like Tripadvisor.com or booking.com to find something that perfectly suits your needs.

We have stayed at Hotel Genio several times and will stay there on future trips. The locagion is perfect for us, just steps from Piazza Navona.
There are many many restaurants nearby, and we have walked nearly everywhere, including the Vatican, Piazza del Popolo, the Forum and Colosseum, and the Borghesi Gardens and. of course to the nearby Pantheon and Trevi Fountain.
The hotel has a delightful rooftop terrace, and the breakfast room has great views, too.

No availability for the Hotel Genio which looked like a wonderful place.
To the nytraveler, assuming NY is New York - I am also from the states. I should have said we want to spend a day in Vatican City. Sorry you misunderstood me. I do have a map but thank you for the suggestion. I have checked Pompeii and it is possible to do a day trip which would indeed be a long day but I feel worth it.

We stayed at Visconti Palace Hotel in August 2011 and enjoyed it. It's not 5 star luxury property by any means, but the rooms are updated and clean, plus with everything there is to see in Rome, you won't want to spend much time in your hotel room. To compare it to a US chain, I would say it's comparable to your average Hilton. Here's the website: http://www.viscontipalace.com/hotel-...aly/index.html
Location-wise, it's walking distance to the Vatican. To see the rest of Rome, we usually just took a cab across the river to a central location and then walked. It is technically possible to do Pompeii as a day trip, but you're looking at about a 2 hour train ride to Napoles, then a 45 minute train ride to Pompeii. So about 6 hours of travel round trip. I would recommend spending a couple day in Sorrento, where a day trip to Pompeii is much more feasible.

Hotel Teatro di Pompeo is very centrally located, on a tiny piazza just off Campo do Fiori.

The hotel is built on the ancient Theater of Pompey, and the breakfast room is very interesting if you're interested in ruins.

you will get many hotel recommendations for Rome - funny how we all like to recommend the place we stayed at ourselves. Are there no bad hotels in Rome? [BTW, I'm just as bed - we liked our hotel near the Vatican - http://www.hotelgravinasanpietro.it/ - and it's certainly within your price range]
instead of Pompeii, you might like to visit Ostia Antica - the port for ancient Rome. It's surprisingly well-preserved, very accessible, and makes a great 1/2 day trip. you get there on the train from Rome Ostiense station. There's a medieval town there too with a few restaurants and a church which we didn't go into as there was a christening going on.

My favorite hotel in Rome is the Albergo del Senato, located in the same piazza as the Pantheon. IMHO, the location is terrific! I've stay there twice last year and will stay again later this year.

Great suggestion from annhig re: swapping Pompei for the MUCH closer and also very well preserved Ostia Antica!
Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) at Tivoli is also a great day trip. We've long wanted to visit Villa d'Este, also in Tivoli, but have never managed it. Some day...

Hi ann,
Ha, how funny! My guess is that we actually might make it to see at least the gardens of Villa d'Este the next time we are in Rome. We now have two little boys (completely surprised to find out we were expecting baby 2 the day before we left for Italy last May!), so sights with outdoor spaces are a must!

Hi Ann, I love the hotel but was wondering if it was within walking distance without killing us (we are late 40's not 20's) to all the major sites in Rome or if we would have to figure out the train schedules which I'm terrified of after going on the sites and not being able to figure anything out.

mim - there is a train station nearby - St. Peter's it's called, but it's the overground so you probably won't need it unless you go to Ostia Antica. [you get the train to Ostiense and change onto the line that goes to Ostia - easy].
our main way of getting about was walking [and I'm 56] and the bus. there is a bus stop abut 5 mins walk from the hotel where you can catch several buses, the most useful being the 527 which goes along the corso vittorio emmanuele, [the main spine that runs east to west giving access to the campo dei fiori, piazza navona etc] past the largo di argentina [another bus hub] and all the way to the piazza venezia. [the "Wedding cake" at the bottom of the via del corso] some of them go as far as the colosseum. you can buy a bus map for Rome for €3 from places that sell bus tickets, book shops, etc.
the tabacchi next to the bus stop sold individual tickets or you can get a week's pass for €24.
one of the advantages of the hotel was the proximity to St. Peter's [10 mins] but being in a real "locals'" area, so restaurants were cheap, and good. one of the rooms occupied by one of our group even had a view of the Dome of St. Peter's and we saw it at all hours of the day and night, every time we came out of the hotel. and the breakfasts were great.
another advantage was that after slogging round the Vatican museums we had a very short distance to go home!

Thank you Ann. I was trying to choose between this hotel which is cheaper and looks nicer and the Capo d' Africa hotel which is closer in. You've helped me make up my mind. Just did not want to wast a ton of time walking back and forth and not seeing what I wanted to see. We will in Rome for 3 1/2 days so I'm trying to maximize my time.

mim - with just 3 1/2 days, a Roma pass might be a worthwhile investment.
I don't know the Capo D'Africa so I can't help you compare. i have however looked at it's website and suspect that you would do as much walking staying there as you would at the Gravina - you just get to know different parts of Rome!
if you've decided on the Gravina, you could click on my screen-name and see my trip report from our recent visit to give you some idea about restaurants etc.
I might even try and finish it over this weekend!

mim - i'm sure you'll like it.
not glamourous but comfortable, and smart, and the lady who serves the breakfast is a sweety! [you can ask her to make you a cappuccino and /or expresso as well as the american coffee that is available at the buffet].
feel free to ask me anything you like and i'll so my best to answer!

Restaurants info would be great. As well as any tips on what to see and where to go first. I'm working on my days and what I want to see when but am open to suggestions and help as always.
