Spend about 5 or 6 hours on a guided tour of St. Peters, the Vatican museum, and the Sistine Chapel. Do not attempt to do it on your own -- there is SO MUCH more you will learn from a good, personable guide. Walking Tours of Rome is good, as are several services recommended in this forum.

Hi Patty. My favorite five sights in Rome, grouped by area, were: <BR> <BR>. St. Peter's Basilica (don't miss the panoramic view from the top of the cupola!), and the Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel) <BR> <BR>. The Pantheon (which faces the Piazza della Rotonda) & Piazza Navona (in the same area) <BR> <BR>. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Campidoglio, and the Vittorio Emanuelle II monument (all in the same area) <BR> <BR>. Campo di Fiori, Via Guilia, and the former Jewish Ghetto (in the same <I>general</I> area) <BR> <BR>. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the Borghese Museum (in the same <I>general</I> area)

I agree with the previous poster as to favorite sites...to this I would just add some embelishments: <BR> <BR>The Campidoglio is spectacular...be sure to walk to the left rear of the piazza for the best views down on to the Roman Forum. The Vittorio Emanuele II monument is found in the Piazza Venezia. Also, liked the stroll down the Via Condotti from the Spanish Steps.

Just recently arrived back from a trip to Rome, and my top 5 highlights are: <BR> <BR>- walking up to St Peter's Square (walk up Via d. Conciliazione), around 10am with very few people around, it just takes your breath away to see the size of it all <BR>- standing inside St Peter's, so massive (perhaps about 20 tour groups of 40 people were about at the same time, and they were hardly noticable) <BR>- walking up the rounded staircase of the Castel Sant'Angelo, and reaching the top and seeing all of Rome <BR>- walking through the Roman Forum, stopping and touching buildings that Caesar walked past <BR>- turning around a street corner, and finding an historical site being uncovered by archeologists with no other tourists around

I would try to take a walking tour of the Forum. Most of it is rubble now, and without a guide (either a person or a detailed guidebook), you won't get the full of effect of it being poplated by senators and citizens at the hight of Rome's power. Have fun!
