You probably break the law more often than you realize -- or even the Italian police realize. They can't keep track of all the laws. The politician who lost the last election to Berlusconi ran on a campaign promise to wipe 5,000 laws off the books immediately, without ever saying which ones, but nobody doubted it was a start.

Berlusconi won and removed just one law -- the law which happened to have him under indictment, but he made it so nobody else could get indicted for stealing either! Then they made it illegal to eat pizza in front of other people if you don't look Italian.

Quite a few have multi rooms,(beds for more than 3) and although I haven't used these in Roma, there certainly seem to be many available.
I have booked with this company and they seem willing to enquire as to special requests - they are also prompt at answering emails.
LAR 134 looks nice - multi w cont breakfast & onsite parking for €155 - I know more than you want to pay, but you will have to do the digging
Quite a few also have triple rooms - maybe they could add a cot.

This is very sad, but after reading all your advice,and getting replies from the various links you provided (including monasteries,convents and hostels,even eurocamp places outside Roma),we've come to this conclusion.
We shall spend the 4 nites in Cannes, spend a couple of nights en route in Italy but just near the French/Italy border,and then head towards Marne la Vallee and spend 3-4 nites there. Using that as a base,we can take the boys to DLP and go into Paris by train and visit Versailles.
Last summer we had a lovely blissful week in Paris and another week driving between Lourdes in the south back towards Calais,stopping at will and discovering lovely places like Saumur.But last summer the euro wasn't this strong,and I have a feeling we're packing in too much if we did Rome too this year(I realise some of you came to this conclusion ages ago!).

Many thanks for all the help.I mean it! I have taken down notes for the Roman holiday that has been postponed,not cancelled.

Rome will always be there. They don't call it the Eternal City for nothing. What would have been truly sad is to have spent a lot of money getting there, only to find you had miserable accommodations, were forced beyond your budget for food, and had to leave early to save money -- or couldn't afford the entrance fees to attractions.
