If you only have time for 2 incredible amazing restaurants, I've been to Camponeschi 3 times and Vecchia Roma probably 10 times (my colleagues there call it our secret restaurant). That being said, if you MUST choose 1 of the 2 (please don't - go to both!) I'd give the edge to Camponeschi. I find myself wondering "How _do_ they make it taste this way?" more in there. Here's the info from my Palm Pilot:

1) Camponeschi - Piazza Farnese, 50
from the US: 011-39-06-687-4927
from your Rome hotel room: 0-06-687-4927

2) Vecchia Roma - Piazza Campitelli
from the US: 011-39-06-686-4604
from your Rome hotel room: 0-06-686-4604
I believe Vecchia Roma is closed on ?Wednesdays? but be sure to double check

Also excellent but in a different way and probably something a foodie would enjoy:
Last month I walked from the Pantheon to Piazza Navona, and kept going in that direction past Piazza Navona (i.e., passed Tre Scalini on my right) and I stumbled across

3) Ecco Bombo 06-6880-3469
on the left. It was so small I almost missed it. Across the street is a fabulous postcard / book shop where I found Vintage B&W Italian postcards. I recognized it as being recommended, but I had never been there.

It was lovely.

I'll append some info for my favorite driver there - Walter. I want to help him out because he said business was so terrible since Sept 11. Please give Walter your business! He's come to my rescue several times there. Here is my old post.

=========
Just spent a week in Rome (for work) and am in Berlin for the weekend. I have been to Rome ~ 10 times in the past 2.5 years for work, and have been meaning to post info about my driver. On the way to the airport this past week he told me how difficult it has been with everyone from the US not traveling.

His name is Walter Bellapadrona, and I really adore him. He is fun to be with, gracious, helpful, and not overly expensive. He is native Roman but lived in London for a while and therefore speaks English well. He has been driving for 8 years, and has taken courses on the history of Rome. He will drive you around in a nice Benz (dont remember what kind.) I hope to have him as a guest sometime when he visits the US.

His hourly driving around Rome and touring excursions = $45 / hour. This gets you someone who knows the chaotic but wonderful city of Rome inside and out who can save you time and will wait for you everywhere.

His airport to Center of Rome connection = $45.

One example of how wonderful Walter is:
On my flight in to Rome via Charles De Gaulle, Paris, (god I hate that airport), my luggage was lost in Charles de Gaulle. Walter waited with me for several hours till my luggage came in on the next flight and ALSO helped me translate a speech that I had to make the next day.

He has created a website www.romelimousine.com, and you can write to him at [email protected]. He has a partner (Giancarlo) in his business that lived in the US for 16 years and also. Giancarlos car is set to accept credit cards.

If you want to call Walter from Rome, his cell phone = 335-625-4656. From the US, that is 011-39-335-625-4656, but remember he is 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so please call at a sane hour (< 10pm Rome time.)

nancy
You must go to La Rosetta. It has wonderful seafood- not cheap. It's on a side street off the Pantheon. My brother recently returned from Rome and while there asked his cab driver to take him to a place where the "locals" go. The name of the restaurant was (can you believe it)Macaroni. He said the food was like Italian home cooking at its best- pleasant atmosphere too. It was somewhere in the Trastevere.

I just found this thread-I'm looking for a wonderful place for dinner on our last night in Rome next month. The restaurants on top of the Hilton or the Hotel Eden look great, but how formal is the dress code there? Would my husband and 2 sons require jackets? We weren't really planning on bringing formal clothes. Would nice pants and a collared shirt be okay? Somehow I don't think so. Any suggestions for a really nice place to eat where we could dress rather informally?
