Any suggestions re. entertainment in Rome in the evening? We're older women interested in history, music or even a good movie in a safe neighborhood. Our hotel is close to the Vatican.

My very favorite place to be at night in Rome is right in front of the Pantheon. The piazza is lit, the fountain is lit, the outdoor cafes provide the music and, for me, it's just like stepping back in time and absolutely magical. Everything takes on a yellow glow. Just have a gelato and people watch.

Another place is in front of the Trevi Fountain. I really enjoyed it and there are plenty of restaurants and such in the area.

Simply walking around the streets. Every turn you'll find something magical.

Oh, that second leaflet is a little old now - aren't we all - and prices etc have moved on somewhat, so don't rely on everything it says.

Where they differ, I'd take the other one as being the more correct!

Hope this doesn't detract too much, I also found just wandering about magical but as I have only been to Rome the once, are there particular areas where wandering about would 'pay off'.

Years ago we walked to the top of Castel Sant' Angelo, at night and it had a magnificent view.

several years ago we rented an apartment in the Jewish ghetto neighborhood for a week. I found it really magical to stroll from Trastevere over the Isola Tiberina into the ghetto. This is a largely a pedestrian-only area, quiet and atmospheric. Several of the monuments in the ghetto area are illuminated it night

I also meant to mention that dinner in Rome is fairly late by U.S. standards so the idea of walking before and after dinner makes sense and may work out better than trying to fit in entertainment like a movie

Strolling Rome at night is magical! Don't even think about being in a movie - the real movie is right in front of you.

Enjoying the suggestions for my own trip!

we stayed near the via coronari, and frequently found ourselves wandering down there at night on the way to dinner [several nice choices along there] looking at the antiques in the windows and trying to decide what we would take home if we could. [i wonder if that lovely marble table i coveted is still there? though i suppose if I could have afforded it, it would have taken me a bit over weight!]

talking of movies, just round the corner from the via coronari on the wonderfully named via panico is a little cafe/bar where we saw an actor who was in "La dolce Vita" repeat his act from the film. He's getting on a bit [and may no longer be performing, though he looked the type who will carry on til he drops] but it was very entertaining. I'll try to find the name of the bar and come back if I can.

I must disagree with "don't even think about a movie." If you are going in summer, there are some places in Rome where movies are shown outdoors, in particular, on an island in the middle of the Tiber river, with all of historic Rome as a backdrop.

There is also a small historic movie theatre in Trastevere that shows English language movies. Joining Italians for a night out and a pizza after can be a fun way to participate in the ongoing life of Rome.
