Friends recently stayed in this area and really enjoyed it. They liked that it was quiet and they could access the busier areas from there. Budget.... thinking of going in winter.. so around 1000 Euros for a week.

Look at www.sleepinitaly site. If this is your first trip to Rome I would also suggest you make very sure that this is where you want to stay.
You can get a very nice and well located apartment for 1000 euros (except holidays)in winter and some very nice ones are even less.

There aren't many apartments on the Aventino. It's mostly villas that are used as embassies and ambassadorial residences.
You could try VRBO. On rental-agency sites, apartments on the Aventino would likely be listed under Colosseum.
Would you consider Testaccio, at the foot of the Aventino? Not as quiet an area, but there are many apartments there.
If you find something, it would likely come in under your budget.
