Rome and Greece what to do

My husband & I live in Tampa. We are going to Rome and Greece In Sept 05. We will have 4 full days (not including travel days) in each. What would you do if you had only 4 days in each. We are in our late 40s and like good ethnic food, architecture, walking, concerts and just about everything. We went to London in 75 and my favorite days were when we would take off walking with no particular place to go.
Thanks

4 days where in Greece?

For an introduction to Rome, click at the top of this screen on Destinations, and you will see that fodors provides lots of basic suggestions for Rome, including the top sights and how to structure an itinerary for short stays.

I'll suggest also for Rome that you consider a guided walking tour or two to help you make the most of what you are seeing. My guide organization of choice is Context Rome (aka, Scala Reale), but Enjoy Rome also gets good reviews and its walks are shorter and also less expensive. The two sites where the guide comes in handy are the Forum/Colosseum, and the Vatican.

Try to imagine someone saying, "I'm coming from France to spend four days in the US, where should I go and what should I see". How would you answer that? You need to tell us much more about where you will be and what you WANT to see in a country as big and diverse as Greece. Are you looking for going to one island and relaxing for four days or staying in Athens (I assume you must have a flight to or from there) and seeing things in that area.

Rome on the other hand is fine for four days. You need to pick up a good guidebook, like insights, and study up on the things you want to see there. You can do much in four days.

We will be in Athens. We would like to see the great architecture, music, shopping. We will not have time for the more relaxing trip. We want to walk through the streets which are not tourist traps.
Thank so far for the great responses.

Take one of your Athens days and do a daytrip. One popular destination is Cape Sounion to the south, where you can see a marvelous temple to Poseidon.

Another option is to take a one-day boat cruise of the Saronic Gulf islands quite near Athens--the usual stops are Aegina, Hydra, and Poros. You only get 2-3 hours on each island, but it is an easy way to see them, and Hydra is especially beautiful.

rahjmh, you might want to get the Dorling Kindersley Travel Guide entitled "Rome". It will give you a wealth of information for Rome.

Have not been to Greece at all but with your stated interest I know you will have a beautiful time in Rome. Rome is best enjoyed by walking in my opinion.

Have fun planning your trip!
