Please give a price range for your definition of "inexpensive," in order to receive the most useful responses.

This recent thread has recommendations for accomodations under about $100 US in Rome, Florence (and Venice.)
To find others, type "hotel AND budget AND cityname" into the text box at the top of this page.

We stayed at the Hotel Centrale while in Florence in March. While it was a little noisy at times (walls were thin, as are most hotel walls in Europe!) the price was right, good breakfast, and the location was great: very close to the duomo. Here is the website:

Earlier this month we were in Florence for 3 nights and stayed at the Hotel Dali (they have a website. It was very nice for a budget hotel, and the location was perfect, about 2 blocks from the Duomo. We had a triple with private bath for 95 Euro. It was very clean.

Rome: Fraterna Domus 78E. Operated by nuns, you have to be in by 11PM. Exceptionally clean-have showers/toilet in rooms. Includes breakfast. You can buy dinner at night if you wish. Very close to Piazza Navona and across the river from Castello St Angelo/Vatican Have stayed there three times. Single beds. Last time we stayed they put my son and me in a large room that had 4 beds. www.domusnm.it
Florence: I agree with the poster above- Residenza Johanna. Have stayed there twice-I think it was about 72E for two. Has a bathroom/shower in room. They have more than one location-we have only stayed at the via Bonificio Lupe location. They have croisants in the room and you can make coffee, tea at any time. [email protected]. Website www.johanna.it. Also very clean.
Good place in Venice is Alloggia Alla Scala. Near the Rialto stop. I think that we paid 80E for the large room but they have smaller ones for about 72E. Family is very nice. Telephone 041 521 0629
These places are all simple and very clean. I think that they all require you to post a one night deposit.

For inexpensive lodgings in Florence you might want to check my online review of the Instituto Oblate dell'Assunzion at the link below (you will have to "copy" then "paste" the link in your broswer's window). In my opinion, a gem of a place: just 1/2 mile behind the Duomo at Borgo Pinti 15; inexpensive (from $54/night for singolo without bath). 30 rooms - singles, double, triples, both with and withoug baths (baths, by the way, are enclolsed showers. No water running on the floor). Lodgings are beautiful and rooms tasteful. The place is spotless! Safe neighborhood; several small trattorie and grocery stores on the same block. There's an elevator. Oblate sisters very, very hospitable. Cash only! There's an 11:30 pm curfew. Check out is by 10:00 am (you can leave your luggage in a secure room right next to the reception desk). RESERVATIONS PREFERRED! By fax or phone. Was recommended in the book, Bed and Blessings. Hope this helps.

We too stayed at the Hotel Centrale in April, and we were a bit dissapointed. The location is great and the breakfast was very good but the furnishings and decor was very shabby and just a bit depressing.
We stayed at the Il Perseo on our last trip to Florence, and although it is only a one star hotel we prefered it because the rooms were cleaner and lighter and brighter. The breakfast was not as extensive at the Il Perseo but we had a nicer bathroom. We tried to book again this time but they were full.
Good luck with your search

Perseo, your review of Inst. Oblate dell'Assunzion, where we stayed in October 2001, was right on; it's a good find for Florence. The sisters also speak French. We had the "penthouse suite," which included a bedroom with three small single beds, a small dressing room, a big bathroom with tub (no shower), and a sun porch on the top floor overlooking the garden. We had requested a double, and got this "suite" by the luck of the draw, I guess. Although the weather was very warm, the AC in our room was apparently turned off for the season and refused to cool despite persistent tinkering by the family's engineer. As perseo reports the place was spotless and I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. The convent would be especially appealing to a woman traveling alone. Be sure to book as early as possible. I had to fax a couple of times before receiving a reply. I've recommended the convent several times on Fodors. Wish I were there right now!
