Romantic Road Practicalities

Sorry for posting twice

I will be driving the Romantic Road from Fussen to Rothenburg in May. I have read a lot about the Romantic Road on this forum and in travel guides. Nowhere have I seen any info as to driving on the road itself i.e speed limits, number of lanes, truck traffic, tour buses etc. Can anyone fill me in on the practicalities of driving on this road. Additionally, how long does it take to drive from Fussen to Rothenburg on the Romantic Road. Viamichelin only gives directions on the A7 through Ulm (250km in 2hr 20min)

Thanks.

From what I recall most of the Romantic Road is between 1 and 2 lanes between Augsuburg/Rothenburg/Schwangau but there did not seem to be a lot of traffic and I moved at a good clip early in the morning. Speed limit averaged 100 KMH. From Munich the trip to Neuschwanstein was 1.5 hrs and Rothenburg to Munich was about an hour. Fussen is a little further south.

The traffic from Fuessen to Augsburg gets rather slow at times. There is some truck traffic in that area, but it isn't too bad.
Much of the way from Fuessen to Rothenburg isn't very scenic, with a few notable exceptions south of Rothenburg.

The Romantic Rd. is basically a 2 lane road but quite good and traffic isn't too bad. I travelled it on a Sat. so hardly had any problem whatsoever. Also good signage so you find your way without a problem.

kc,

You can force a map/driving directions from Via Michelin by inputing stopover cities along the RR.

I input Fussen to Rothenburg with stopovers of Landsberg am Lech, and Augsburg. This seemed to do the trick!

I am surprised there isn't good driving directions on the RR website or anywhere else on the internet. Looked all over the Welcome to Germany site with no luck. Seems like the German tourist group would want to publicize the route??

The A-7 Autobahn parallells the Romantische Strasse almost all the way. So, it is easy to skip back and forth between the 2-lane Ro.Str (speed limit 80km) and the A-7 (no limit, with a few exceptions.)

I probably would take the A-7 north as far as Ellwangen, the "pop over" to the B-25 (Ro.Str.) at Dinkelsbuehl, and follow the Ro.Str. from there to Rothenburg, Creglingen and Wertheim on the Main River, where it treminates. An alternate route (which I highly recommend)is: Creglingen,Weikersheim, Bad Mergentheim, and then get off the Ro.Str. when it crosses the A-81 Autobahn south of Tauberbischofsheim. Take the A-81 - and at Limbachshof - the B-27 to Wuerzburg. W. is well worth a half day's visit. It is called the Salzburg of Germany. Has a magnificient castle overlooking the city and an impressive baroque palace, with wonderful gardens, near the city center.

There are brown Romantische Strasse signs at every main intersection directing you which way to keep going on the RR.
Also if you print out a list of the towns on the RR in order, you can go to Via Michelin and trace the route from town to town (it follows the RR this way). There are bright yellow signs (huge) that list which city/town you are heading toward all along the roads so you can tell that you are indeed headed to the next RR town.

I am leaving next week and doing the same trip, thank you for the infor on the paral. roads, it is great to know.

I was thinking of staying at Hotel Rebstock in Wurzburg, Hotel Eisenhut in Roth. Have you heard or know anything about these hotels?
