alpine rd or romantic rd

Well the Romantik Road could - head over to Wurzburg and take it all the way to Munich.
alpine road would be much more a detour but also a lot more romantic IMO than the busy Romantic Road - a ho-hum thoroughfare that however does skirt several really romantic towns.
I thought the Castle Road (Heidelberg to Rothenburg, on the Romantic Road was super - down the gorgeous Neckar Valley and meandering thru old towns, etc. Drive from Cologne to Hedielberg (one of Germany's finest old towns and one of the few not decimated in WWII) and Castle Road to Rothenburg.
Romantic Road is a name conjured up by the German Tourist Office years ago and has zero to do IMO with the road itself being romantic - the Alpine Road to me is as it skirts the Bavarian Alps the whole way.

Palenque advice is very good.
The Alpine Rd is a beautiful drive mostly, but way out of the way.
Or try some other scenic roads

Or be very bold (and crazy) and enjoy the German Motorbike Route on the section from Cologne to Munich.

The trip from Cologne to Munich will take you at about 4 1/2 hours on main roads as it is. Drive to Rothenburg via Hedielberg and the Castle Road, then overnight there. Then take the Romantic Road to Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, Augsburg or Ulm and on to Munich then.

Near Heidelberg on the Neckar River is a little gem called Bad Wimpfen. Medievel towers and walls, as well as the ruins of an Imperial Palace and cobble stoned streets perched above the river make this a wonderful place to visit.

Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen, Feuchtwangen all are worth a visit as well. Another nearby town we enjoyed is Schwaebisch Hall.
