River Cruise Boats
What river boat company would anyone suggest I take. My wife and I are thinking of going on one in mid September. And how many days would you suggest ?

Since you don't seem to be getting a lot of answers I suggest you go to the rivercruise forum at www.cruisecritic.com
Those boards are very active and I am sure you will be able to contact many who have done a Russian River Cruise.

Grand Circle Travel does a Russian river cruise. I haven't done it myself but the reviews on the web site are good.

We used Viking for a river cruise from Mosco to St.Petersburg and found it quite good. Also, Vangage has a Russia package too, and we have used them for other European river cruises. Both are good and seem to be offering some good discounts now.

We took a Viking River Cruises trip from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We had no complaints with the boat or service. The lectures on board were excellent. Only regret was that we did not add on several extra independent days in both cities.

As ancient independents we both balked at the idea of a river cruise...but having taken a wondeful canal barge trip (Alsace-Lorraine)last year, decided to go the next step and graduate to a full blown river trip...we chose Viking (rather, Viking chose us by offering a 2-for-1 for this past October)...Having been to Russia twice during the USSR days, I was not reluctant to once again experience fall weather..rather it be cold and mosquito-less...don't mind bundling up a bit.
The journey was utterly super...everything about it...Viking seems to be a first class option....the daily shore excursions were crisply organized and the lectures were excellent. I even gave a well-received lecture on Russian Folk Music complete with excerpts of a wide variety of songs.
Breakfast buffets were enormous and top quality, lunches were more than just adequate, and dinners were for the most part quite good (just a matter of personal taste). We opted to go into town for a few meals...yes, it was a 12 night tour including three days in Moscow and three in St. Pete...while vsiting five towns and villages along the way. Photo ops galore!
A few of the excursions were optional, and we skipped several, having been there, done that. But most excursions were included.
Both Roz and I highly recommend Viking, and certainly would consider another Viking venue in the future. All cabins had hotel style beds and more than reasonable square footage. Service? Impeccable.
Not able to fully cleanse our blood streams from the independent travel we've enjoyed for so many decades, we left after St. Pete, flew to Belarus and then into the Ukraine for two weeks on our own following the Volga journey. A great adventure throughout.
Here are the pics which will give you an idea of the Viking portion.
