Let RS tell everyone Rovinj is seedy and it won't be so crowded. It was a stop on our cruise and we all loved it!!

I wouldn't say they are seedy; busy, yes. In many places you can get away from "seediness" often by just exploring and being adventurous. But I've been to Piran, Porec and Rovinj and have found no seediness there. There are definitely tons of other spots in the world I would rank MUCH higher on the Seedy Scale! Rovinj and Porec may be 2/10 for seediness at most; they can be 8-9/10 for being packed with tourists, especially in summer.

I actually prefer Istria to the rest of the country, although I am in love with the entire Croatia. Give it a chance - you are sure to love it, too!

Recently I read an article by Rick Steve's on CNN.com where he wrote glowingly about how FUN Tijuana is!

I almost fell off my chair! Not one mention of travel advisories, murder, kidnapping, drug cartel gun battles in the street - he didn't even call it 'seedy' so I am now more wary about his judgment.

From the above replies, no one has talked me out of Istria. Rather, I'm more encouraged to visit.

Maitaitom - "I think the only thing "seedy" thing about Rovinj were the four of us after four weeks of traveling together." Once again, you have me LOL! I will check out your apartment. I stayed in an apartment in Dubrovnik & loved it.

Huddoshots - I'll watch out for those Croatian Reds! Thanks for the encouragement to combine Istria with Slovenia.

Bobthenavigator - thanks for the opinion of Piran. I may work it in to my trip around the penninsula.

Kybourbon - "I think Rick has smoked one too many seeds." Too funny!

Travel2live2 - "I've been to Piran, Porec and Rovinj and have found no seediness there." I think that sums up the group opinion. Porec is also on my itinerary. Thanks for the endorsement.

Sheri_Ip - "Recently I read an article by Rick Steve's on CNN.com where he wrote glowingly about how FUN Tijuana is!" Unbelievable! Fun?? Now I really question his opinion. That is one of the few places I've visited in the world where I have been truely uncomfortable.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm headed to Slovenia & Istria.

Try to see the Kvarner region as well, which includes Plitvice.

LittleVicky - I haven't yet been to Plitvice. I've read so many wonderful things about it but I'm not sure I'm going to have the time on this trip. I'm trying to work it in. But, as much as I love Croatia, I know I will go back again & again. So, if not this trip, then the next!

Dee Dee, I'm chiming in late but have to agree with everyone else that Istria is fantastic. I adored Rovinj and would go back in a heartbeat over almost anywhere else I've ever been. You didn't ask about Slovenia but since you are going, make time for the Vintgar Gorge near Bled (if you get that far east and aren't just doing the coast). It is a fairly easy 2 hour hike (down and back) down a misty gorge with rushing water. It is very magical and since you don't have time for Plitvice, it would be a good substitute. It was my favorite thing in Slovenia.

CordeliaCH - thanks for the endorsement & suggestion. I will be going to Lake Bled & I love to walk/hike. The Vintgar Gorge sounds like something I would truely enjoy, especially as you said it was your favorite in Slovenia. Again, thank you for the suggestion!

Piran is charming, but small. Portoroz is very much a weekend destination for Slovenes who live inland, meaning the traffic and parking can be problematic. My friends from Ljubljana go regularly for the day, but they do not swim. They say the water is cleaner and safer further south along the Croatian coast because the currents come up the east side of the Adriatic and go back down the west side. When you are in Slo, consider visiting the wineries a bit inland from the coast, and Lipica (the original stud of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and breeder of the Lipizzaner).

I agree that Vintgar Gorge is a terrific stop.

As far as the Lipizzaner stop, well......I know that Dee Dee read my report so I'll leave it at that. Here's a hint....Neigh.

Equitraveler - I'm always on the lookout for good wineries! (I do like good fermented grapes - LOL!) Could you recommend specific wineries you enjoyed? Thanks for the input on Portoroz. I'll certainly remove that from consideration.

Maitaitom - "neigh" - your sense of humor is alive & well!

Maitaitom:

What a shame you didn't have the opportunity to visit Lipice back in the 80's when it was still a small village of 3 houses. There weren't any entry fees and no show, just the stalions and a trainer. We had the opportunity to pet them, watch them being groomed and just hang around. Sounds as though it has changed greatly.
During the last war the stalions were taken by the Serbian soldiers and were just finally returned. They were not in good shape and had to be nursed back to health. The war not only injured the people, it affected the animals and the land.
There is still so much more here to experience. I look forward to your return visit. Please do make sure the rest of the gang comes also.
