Rhine valley/Mosel Valley-hotels that you recommend?
Okay-first of all I want to thank everyone who has responded on my previous threads and has helped me. I have narrowed our "family vacation"(meeting our son coming in from India and us from the states to Frankfurt for a family vacation before he starts a course for a week in Frankfurt).
BACHARACH-anyone ever stayed at any of the Rick Steves hotels?(Stop laughing everyone-there aren't too many guidebooks with Bacharach listings!)Any of the pension listings?
SANKT GOAR-again any Rick Steves listings or any from Frommers or Fodors that you stayed at? Hotel Landsknecht or Romantikhotel Schloss Rheinfels?
BOPPARD-possibly the
BW Hotel Bellevue?
Still trying to decide in Trier as alot are booked for the time period we need-any suggestions? Thanks one and all!

What is your budget per night for a hotel? Can't quite discern it from your suggested hotels.
I notice your only stop on the Mosel is Trier. There are several cute little towns along the Mosel that make good overnight stays. Trier is more of a city.
On the Rhine we can recommend the Castle Hotel auf Schonburg: www.hotel-schoenburg.com. A nice hotel and it's fun to stay in a castle.

Have a look a Haus Lipmann in Beilstein, on the Mosel. It is a lovely family run hotel, much recommended by Fodorites, and quite rightly so.

Hi,
I can't give suggestions for the towns you listed, but we can recommend the Hotel Rebenhof in Valwig, across the Mosel from Cochem.

We really enjoyed Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein also. The restaurant was very good, and it's not far from my favorite castle, the wonderful Burg Eltz.
We stayed at the Landsknecht and found it quite acceptable.
Your post is making me nostalgic.
Hey, I always buy a Rick Steves and a Frommers before I visit anywhere.

We stayed at the Rhein Hotel in Bacharach a couple of years ago. We paid 84 Euro for a double. It was a nice family run hotel with a great restaurant. Outside eating area overlooking the Rhein.

We also have stayed at the Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein and can highly recommend it also. Lovely owners. Amazing customer service and wonderful restaurant. Nice outdoor terrace overlooking the Mosel. Price for our double was 85 Euro. As I remember, they only take cash.

I have already got the Haus Lippman in Beilstein for two nights but am starting our trip out from the Frankfurt airport so wanted to do a couple nights on the Rhine,go to Beilstein and then the last two nights in Trier.
I thought that Trier would be interesting because of the Roman ruins, etc. Should we be adding an extra day at the Haus Lippman instead?

Forgot to add-Since there are 4 of us, we either need a quad room or two double rooms which can be expensive at this time of year. I am looking at no more than 90/100 euros a double or 160/180 for a quad room.Preferably cheaper if possible! Thanks-

It's about an hour or less to drive from Beilstein to Trier so you could do it easily as a day trip. That would be preferable to moving hotels for one night.
In Bacharach, contact Pension Lettie. I believe they are in Rick's book. They get great reviews on Fodor's and also on Trip Advisor. Clean, basic rooms at a reasonable price. Do a search here on Fodor's for Pension Lettie and you'll find more info.

Hi,
I'd say stay an extra night or two in Beilstein and visit Trier from there. We visited Trier, Bernkastel and Zell in a day from Cochem. So much to see along the Mosel. Burg Eltz is a must in my opinion. Bernkastel and Cochem are charming old towns also.

I traveled last summer to Germany and Austria with three teenagers. We stayed two nights in a large quad room at Pension Lettie's in Bacharach. The room was really two rooms with a large bathroom. The breakfast was great and Lettie was very helpful.

Reread Lettie's post to see that she doesn't have the quad room but two doubles which is fine. Just want to double check that Bacharach is a good spot for a base in the Rhine for a couple days as opposed to Rudesheim,St. Goar or Boppard?

A couple of years ago our family of 4 stayed in St. Goar at the place below for 3 days. Our 2-bedroom apartment was clean, roomy and quiet, with a full kitchen (great for breakfast and small snacks) and a great view of the Rhine and Castle Katz on the other side. Unlike the Landesknecht and many other apartments in St. Goar, this apt. is just steps from the boat docks, the train station, and the middle of town. The owner, Mr. Huppertz, speaks English - he rents regularly with the UNTOURS organization - and he'll meet you at the station and walk you to your place. For 4, it should run you about 60-65 Euros per night for a short visit; a small cleaning fee is tacked on (as most rentals do.)

There are other apartments in St. Goar as well; another poster recently spoke well of the Burch apartments which also are right near the center:
www.st-goar.de/586-1-fewos.html
St. Goar is in a more scenic part of the Rhine Gorge than Bacharach and definitely best if traveling by train as there's easy access to the other side of the river (passenger ferry to St. Goarshausen and its train station.) Bacharach has more half-timbered buildings and is very nice but tends to be overloaded with Rick Steves tourists, as it's one of his big rec's; St. Goar's center of town is somewhat touristy but overall the town seems more genuine to me.
Boppard is very nice too. It's bigger than the other two and has lots of tourist services but isn't as scenically situated.
I'd go for St. Goar overall. Bacharach and Boppard are just north and south of St. Goar and you can get to either one from St. Goar in a few minutes by train or by car.

We arrived in Frankfurt and took the train to Bacharach. The next day we road the boat to St. Goar to see some of the Rhine castles. Then we took a train to Moselkern (and later back) to hike to Burg Eltz. It was a very long, but enjoyable day for us all. I know that many people recommend St. Goar or other towns but we liked Bacharach and would return there again. There are many towns to choose from...just go with any of the choices and I am sure you will be pleased!

St. Goar and Boppard hotels have not responded to my emails but I can get availability at the following in Bacharach?
Rhein Hotel
Hotel Europe
Pension Binz
Letties Pension
Any thoughts? We will be renting a car so don't need to be near a train station.
Thanks!
I have also extended to 3 nights at Lipmann per everyone's suggestion-it does seem like it would be less wear and tear running around.

dutyfree, I think you've gotten some good advice. You just need to take a deep breath and make a decision.
As I've told you, we liked the Rhein Hotel very much. You've also gotten a good review on the Pension Lettie. Lettie's is in a great location as well. I'd go with whichever one suits your budget. I think Lettie's might be a little more basic than the Rhein Hotel, but I'm sure either one would be fine.
Here's a photo of Bacharach that shows the sign for Pension Lettie's. If you look at the album this photo is in, you'll see quite a few photos we took in Bacharach.

You would go through this gate to get to the Rhein Hotel which is almost adjacent to the gate:

Bacharach is a lovely town to explore on foot with lots of little side streets and shops.
