Susan, kalena, Thyra, Maira, ellen, rexfan - - and even you too, babble/mellifluous...

I look forward to your e-mailing me to get your pins (I need quantity, "regular" or "PA", and of course, a mailing address). Payment is by the honor system after you get your pin(s).

Best wishes,

Rex
It is too easy to make up a fictitious name and mailing address. Many people have multiple e-mail adresses. And there are many nasty people here. If there are 100 fakers, that's $200. No skin off my nose, just my cautious opinion after reading the things people write.

Rex. Thank you very much for your offer. But you know, I'm still deciding whether this is good "value", i.e. 75 cents for my free-spirited version, vs. $2.00 for the pin version (which I could replicate myself). I'll mull this over and email you directly. You know, maybe if you agreed to donate your profits to a charitable cause, such as the foundation to stem foot and mouth disease...I might just be persuaded. Aloha, k

I believe that (what little) interest (there ever was) in this silly little subject has just about run its course.

So, this might be a bit of a "what I learned from my science project" and "treasurer's report".

I'm not even sure where to start. The latter is easier than the former, perhaps. I initially bought about $30 worth of "stuff", primarily ribbon and the kind of hardware used to make (pierced) earrings. It would have been enough to make 40-50, I think. I thought I might laminate the logos to overcome flimsiness. But I wasn't happy with certain aspects of the design, and went back for more supplies, and incorporated the wood disk that you can see in the picture, along with a more "standard" type "jewelry back" (instead of an earring back), because it is smoother in case this is worn directly through a shirt (as opposed to on a lapel, where the back wouldn't touch skin). So I am up to roughly $50 spent, though I suspect that I can take half this stuff back. Knowing me, I don't know if I will. Maybe if I ever need more supplies for the current design. Otherwise, my time is worth more than $25 to make a trip back to the craft store.

I haven't counted up, but I think that I have fewer than 20 actual confirmed orders. Postage may run more than 50 cents each, so those profits that "kalena" asked about will likely never materialize. So far, one person, from Toronto asked about a charitable contribution, and I replied to "send me $2, and send all you can afford to the Hospital for Sick Children" in her home city. She was so pleased that I selected a Canadian charity, that she went online and immediately made a gift to the hospital (I'll find out how much sometime in the future, when a donor card will apparently get sent to me). I'm sure that many other Children's Hospitals have easy ways to make online charitable donations.

From the beginning, I pledged (even if only to myself) that I would send NO ONE any direct e-mail about this. But I did ask that anyone sending me an "order" to send a cc: to any other Fodorite with whom they correspond (off the board, by direct e-mail). I wanted to see where the "world's slowest chain letter campaign" might end up. It has remained very slow and NOT far-reaching.

Some of you have offered kind words of friendship. But this forum is chiefly a benefit to two kinds of people, and only the first (and smaller?) group are those of "us nuts" who come here regularly. The bigger group (I think) discover this board, get some useful information, a few laughs, or maybe a big turn-off, and move on. I don't think this board is ever destined to get some huge (intermittent/regular) audience like Click and Clack (two of my idols, the irreverent Car Talk brothers on NPR).

And I don't think that Fodor's logo ribbon pins will be spotted often in Europe, New York City, Scotland or Columbus, Ohio. I wouldn't wear one in everyday life. I don't know if I would wear one in Poland/Romania/Slovakia or not. Maybe to a Fodorite get-together.

Have a great day, everybody.

Rex
lol, Pasquino... more than a few people will agree with you...

I think there were more than a few people who nodded affirmatively to the question "if to start"...

and more than a few who will nod affirmatively to the question "if to stop"...

I just can't figure this thing of saying "lol" out. Yes, I know there was a whole thread about what it means awhile back and it still made things as clear as mud.
So, Rex, you know everything so YOU tell me what you meant when you wrote above, lol.
I've heard lots of luck, lots of love, and some other things I forget. But I cannot find the common thread when I see typed out lol.

thanks, Howard...

I already acknowledged that public opinion probably leans towards no further mention of this subject - - and as a corollary, no further topping...

Hardly anyone is asking me for one of these anyway - - it has turned out to be one of those things that is more fun to talk about than to actually do anything about.

Oh, I will still be sending pins to the few people who have written to me, saying that they want one.

Anything else that needs to be said about this matter - - how about starting a new thread? - - once a thread gets this long, it takes too long to retrieve it anyway...

Best wishes,

Rex
