Reservations for the trains

Hi,
We're going to Italy the first of November for about 3 weeks. While in Rome we plan to go by train to Assisi. I've read all the postings about taking the train and I thank you very much for that information. Do we need a reservation beforehand? If so, can we get one online before we leave or must we wait until we arrive in Rome?

In my experience, you can wait until you arrive in Rome to reserve the Assisi trip. We did all our reservations for trips when we first arrived in the city and were at the train station anyway. Then on departure day we just hopped on the train.

You do not actually need to book seats unless you are taking the fast and VERY costly Eurostar trains (which in most cases still require to change trains at Foligno). Taking the 10.32, the 12,14 or the 18,14 Interregionale trains you wil travel for but half an hour longer, spend half as many money and not need to book seats, since these trains do not allow booking.

we didn't need reserv. for any of the intercity or interregional trains.....we pre-purchased a 4 day pass from our travel agent......looked at the train schedules when we arrived in Italy....then just showed up about 15 min. before the train left. we did have to get our passes verified (w/ passports) the first time we used them.

Hi Joan
If you go to www.trenitalia.com you will find that you can purchase tickets on line for the ES* trains.
However, they are not as convenient as the intercity.
I would wait until I got there to buy tickets.
