Will be renting a car in Augsburg, Germany to drive the Romantic Road to Wurzburg. From the US, is autoeurope.com my best option for car rentals? Also, any hints on that area would be appreciated.

Autoeurope or Kemwel often have the best prices, especially if your credit card carries the CDW (mine does, with no deduction); you then choose the "basic" rate. If that rate is not offered, it means that it is not available for that country; the three I know of are Ireland, Italy and Israel. It also implies that the car cannot driven in those countries if rented with the "basic" rate.

These two brokers are also very good if doing a one-way rental, for they will give you the options of rental agencies that offer that without any extra charge--Europcar is the most common agency, although my last rental through them was with Hertz.

Finally, you can rent through them, print out the contract and read all the fine print, and if you do not like it, cancel up to 48 hours prior to picking up the car with no penalty.

We rent Hertz everywhere - but DH has very special corporate rates not available to the public. We have found they always have the larger more powerful automatic cars we like.

And the one time we had an issue we solved it immediately we returned to the US, where they rescinded the extra charges they tried to add when we returned the car in Frankfurt.

Before we moved here we always, always rented from AutoEurope.

During the last one or two years, some low-cost rental companies have popped up in Germany which often score the top search result spots with brokers like AutoEurope.
It's nothing wrong with those companies per se but - like low-cost airlines - they charge for 'extras' like unlimited mileage that are usually included in the rental fee of the major ones (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis). Or make it mandatory to pre-pay for the full tank of gas.
So it pays off to investigate the fine print.

As Augsburg will be a rather small pick-up location regardless from which company you rent, expect even more to get a "or similar" vehicle than the advertised make/model.

I always use gemut.com and even if you use another co. go to gemut and read and download all the info they have on rental in Europe. best of luck jv
