Rental car return in Venice

Hi, all,

We will be renting a car in Italy and dropping it off in Venice. We'll be traveling with our two young kids, so we'd like to make it as easy as possible to return the car. Does anyone have any experience with returning a car to the Avis at the train station? Just curious how easy it is to get in and out of there.

Thanks!
Meredith

After you drop off the car, will you be visiting Venice?

In Venice proper I believe the rental car agencies are at Piazzale Roma--the BUS station.

I say this because I believe in Venezia Mestre, the first town on the mainland from the island of Venice, ther are car rentals near the train station. This is not as convenient as Piazzale Roma.

On our first family trip to Italy a travel agent arranged for my parents to return a car to Venice Mestre train station. It was, as I recall, a bit difficult, because we had then to get us all from Mestre to Venice proper. Driving in to Mestre was more confusing than driving straight into Venice, which is extremely easy.

Since you have kids with you, arrange to return the car at Piazzale Roma, Venice. There are multiple vaporetto stops and water taxis right there.

There is an Avis in Piazzale Roma. This is not the train station.

Santa Lucia Station is a 5-minute walk away, across the Calatrava Bridge.

There is also an Avis in the Via Venezia in Mestre, adjacent to Mestre train station.

Which Avis do you want to use?

We returned one to Hertz in Pizzale Roma. All of the rental companies are in the same complex. Just make sure you arrive during business hours. We arrived on Easter Sunday when the office was closed and the parking lot was full. That created some problems, but you will be fine. The building was easy to drive to and Vaperatto 82, the boat that runs along the Grand Canal, stops right outside.

Thank you, everyone!! Yes, we are staying in Venice after dropping off the car. Sounds like Piazzale Roma is the way to go!
