Car rental pickup Venice - Airport or City

We will be staying in Venice near the Sant'Angelo Vappareto stop on the grand canal, before picking up our rental car and heading for Tuscany. Our choices are to pick up the car at the Hertz office at the airport or Piazzale Roma in the city.

I was thinking that hauling ourselves back out to the airport might be both a hassle and rather costly - however navigating our way to the Autostrada may be dicey.

Anyone with experience renting in Venice?

You don't have an option to pick it up in Mestre, across the bridge?
Mestre is an easy and very short train ride (10 minutes? 15?) from Venice.

I meant to add,
and the Venice S.L. train station is IN Venice, to get there you take a vaporetto (water bus) easily and cheaply. NIce ride too.

Oh, thank you! Mestre was an option, just listed separately - not under venice.

Elaine's advice is correct. You can get the vaporetto (water bus) right to the train station in Venice. But you can also take the vaporetto to the Piazzale Roma stop, walk across the street to the parking garage, and pick up your car at the Hertz office there. In my opinion, going from vaporetto to train and then to rental car is one step too many. I'd suggest you take the water bus to Piazzale Roma and rent your car there---cheapest and quickest. I've done it myself a number of times, and it's a piece of cake. Good luck.

I agree with Wayne. Getting out of Piazzale Roma from the Hertz office is a non-event. (That is if you've mastered your gears -! We just did it in October.
