I will be in Santorini for the 2nd time in June (my friend's first time) and am wondering if a rental car is worth it. I am very independent when I travel and prefer to figure things out on my own when traveling (not too many group tours usually). I'm just wondering if there are really many "off-the-beaten track" spots in Santorini that I will miss if I don't have the car?

We rented a car for our last day on Santorini and turned it in at the airport when we left. It is easy to drive the island and you do get to see some off the beaten track places and beaches. We enjoyed lunch at Amoudi Beach also. The rental car was dropped off at our hotel, was easy to arrange. When we returned it to the airport, just had to put the keys under the mat. Taxis are very expensive on Santorini. Think this is the way to see the island.

We were on Santorini three or four nights (?) and only rented a car for one day. That was fine, but we saw a lot we never could have done without one. We rented from a local place in Fira. It was a brand new car and they went over it with a fine tooth comb when we returned it. We got a little nervous as they examined every inch, but didn't find any scratches or dents. I'm not sure what would have happened if they had found any.

A good friend of mine rented some kind of quadratrack (ATV) last summer and had a wonderful time. She travels alone and loves the adventure.

The last time she visited Santorini, she had rented a motorcycle.
