The best way to get some insights into Czech history and culture is from Czech authors. Read some of Kafka's stories, certainly Jaroslav Hašek's "The Good Soldier Švejk, Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and perhaps something by Václav Havel such as his memoir "Summer Meditations".

the Good Soldier Svejk does give a great insight into the culture of the Czechs,it is dated but much of what is read still applies especially their obsession with dogs and beer.
I have been a great fan of Svejk since I first read the book many years ago and actually have a tattoo of josef Lada's version of Svejk on my left arm.
Kundera's books give a more modern insight into the Czech people.
Havel's Play the Memorandum is worth reading and of course Kafka's books especially the Trial are worth a read.
There is also a book called the Memior of a Prgaue executioner set in the 17th century is quite read.
