Reasonably priced hotels in Madrid
I'm looking for a good hotel between 80-90 euros or up to $115US near the centre of Madrid.
I've been looking on different websites and, perhaps I am missing something, but I just have not struck one that seems to fit the bill of comfortable, reasonable location and in particuliar, quiet.
I just wonder if the chain hotels would be a better bet.
We are there for a week from the middle of November

In the last year I have stayed twice at the Hotel El Prado, a 3 stars with great location near Plaza Santa Ana. We paid around 70 euros for a double. I know it can be higher at other times, but check their website for your dates.

Madrid is relatively expensive.
Try looking at www.booking.com.
BTW I have no idea about the costs in USD.

We stayed at the Plaza Mayor and thought it was a great budget hotel - good location, friendly staff, small but clean rooms. It's located right outside the Plaza Mayor which is the main square in Madrid. It should be within your price range.

Back in 1998 I stayed at Hotel Mora across from Museo del Prado for $60/double. Fast forward 2010 rate is 80 Euros; not bad for a great location also very close to Atocha station. Breakfast is not included, but it is next door to a really nice coffee shop. Try there website: http://www.hotelmora.com/ing/index.html

It is not an unreasonable expectation to stay at a city centre in a quiet hotel. I had many quiet good night sleeps while staying at the Hotel Atlantico on Gran Via-- possibly the noisiest avenue in Central Madrid. This thanks to great room paneling noise insulation. To be sure, just ask for a room away from the congested areas.
That said, if you stay in Madrid in early May during the Festivities of San Isisdro, it is very likely that you will hear noise from the streets. Then again, in 2008 I stayed at Hotel Europa off Puerta del Sol during these festivities and did not heard a pin drop. Go figure.
