It also matters WHEN you plan to go. Like anywhere, prices differ according to season. And for you, does "nice" mandate a queen-size or king-size bed?? Often, very "nice" boutique hotels mainly have double beds and twin beds. The very luxe hotels and the international "chain" hotels like Marriott may have the queen beds... but you do not have the location of hotels like Electra Palace, and they look like any international chain hotel.
My favorite small hotel in the Plaka area is AVA Hotel & Suites... unbeatable location, just 3 floors, charming rooms with balconies, buffet breakfast. I'm a devout budgeteer but if I could, I'd stay at Ava. It has wonderful guest reviews on Trip Advisor. To get further traveler feedback on any hotels that are mentioned here, you can Google "Hotel [name here] Athens reviews".

I stayed at the Grand Bretagne in September 2009. It is on Syntagma Square, catty-cornered from Parliament, within walking distance of the Plaka and most sites. It is very luxurious and has a beautiful restaurant, bar and pool on the roof with a fantastic view of the Acropolis. Breakfast is served each morning in the restaurant so you can begin and end your day with a stunning view.
